Ms. Hoai Thu (Vinh Tuy, Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi) was surprised these days because she had to pay 35,000 VND for a bowl of pho at a familiar restaurant. According to Ms. Thu, the restaurant is located in a small alley, and because the owner does not have to rent a space, it is always cheaper than other places. Normally, the owner sells pho and vermicelli for 30,000 VND per bowl. After the time when the price of gasoline increased, the owner increased the price to 33,000 VND per bowl and did not reduce it again even though the price of gasoline has decreased. Currently, the owner continues to increase the price by 2,000 VND per bowl, even though the quality remains the same.
" When I asked why the price of pho was more expensive than before, the restaurant owner replied that it was because of the increase in electricity prices, plus the peak hot season, which forced the restaurant to use more electricity to cook and serve customers, so to avoid prolonged losses, they had to increase the selling price, " said Ms. Thu.
Similarly, many other pho restaurant owners are also preparing to increase their selling prices to avoid losses due to higher electricity prices.
Ms. Nguyen Thi N., owner of a pho restaurant in Dai Dong ward (Thanh Tri district) has just increased the price from 35,000 VND to 38,000 VND per bowl. She said that despite the hot weather and the decrease in customers, she still has to turn on the air conditioner continuously, while the electricity price has just increased, so if she does not adjust the price, she will lose money.
“Keeping the air conditioner on all the time consumes a lot of electricity. On top of that, the price of electricity has just increased, so the cost has increased. Meanwhile, I sell less because there are fewer customers in the hot weather. I am forced to increase the price by 3,000 VND per bowl only when I am desperate,” she shared.
A bowl of pho costs 38,000 VND at Dai Dong.
Or like the bun rieu shop of Ms. Tran Thi Th. in Hoang Cau area (Dong Da district) has just increased the price by 2,000 VND/bowl. Ms. Th.'s shop is in a small alley, previously it was selling for 32,000 - 33,000 VND/bowl, if you add iced tea it is round to 35,000 VND. Now just the bowl of bun is 35,000 VND not including iced tea and fried breadsticks.
She said: "From the past until now, I have always tried to sell at the cheapest price possible to attract customers because the shop is small. But this time, if I don't increase the price, it will be difficult to make a profit."
Surveying many other noodle and pho shops in Hanoi on May 23, most owners, although not yet increasing their prices, are worried about losses due to increased costs and a decrease in the number of customers due to the hot weather, people are afraid to go out, causing shops to increase expenses and reduce revenue. " If this continues, I will definitely lose money. I am also calculating and considering adjusting prices ," said one shop owner.
Similar to the noodle and pho shop, Mr. Tuan's sugarcane juice shop (Dong Da district) is very popular during the hot season, but he is also thinking about increasing the selling price a little to avoid losses when electricity prices increase.
The shop does not have air conditioning because it mainly sells take-out food. However, the industrial fans and sugarcane peeling machine that run continuously all day "consume" a lot of electricity and are also one of the factors that increase costs.
The sugarcane peeling machine operates all day at Mr. Tuan's sugarcane juice shop.
"Although I sold more products than before the hot weather, compared to this time last year, it is still far behind. Meanwhile, the electricity price this year is much higher, in the long run I may have to increase the selling price a little bit," said Mr. Tuan.
