DNVN - The price of live pigs today, February 17, 2025, recorded a significant recovery after many days of no change, currently fluctuating from 71,000 - 73,000 VND/kg.
Pig price in the North
Surveys show that the price of live pigs in the North has increased by 1,000 - 2,000 VND/kg in the past week. In Phu Tho and Bac Giang, the highest price in the region is currently 72,000 VND/kg. Meanwhile, other provinces such as Lao Cai, Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh maintain the price in the range of 70,000 - 71,000 VND/kg.
Pig price in Central Highlands
Entering the trading day of February 17, the price of live pigs in this area continued to increase, currently fluctuating from 69,000 - 72,000 VND/kg.
The localities with the highest prices are Lam Dong and Binh Thuan, where traders buy at 72,000 VND/kg. Meanwhile, Quang Tri, Quang Nam, Binh Dinh and Khanh Hoa are the provinces with the lowest prices in the region, reaching only 69,000 VND/kg.
Pig price in the South
The South continues to be the region with the highest pork price in the country, fluctuating between 71,000 - 73,000 VND/kg.
Dong Nai, Ba Ria - Vung Tau and Ca Mau are the localities with the highest prices, reaching 73,000 VND/kg. Other provinces in the region still maintain stable prices from 71,000 - 72,000 VND/kg.
In general, the live hog market last week had many unexpected fluctuations. After a period of maintaining a stable price, the live hog price has clearly increased, especially in the Central and Southern regions.
It is forecasted that in the coming time, the price of live pigs is likely to continue to increase if supply decreases or domestic consumption and export demand remains high.
Limited supply pushes up pork prices
Since the Lunar New Year 2025, pork prices have continued to increase, while the output of pigs at wholesale markets in Ho Chi Minh City has decreased significantly. For example, at Hoc Mon market (Hoc Mon district), the number of pigs arriving at the market is only about 2,900 - 3,000/day, down 50% compared to before Tet. The decrease in supply has caused pork prices to increase sharply.
After two days of stable prices, the southern region has now seen the price of live pigs climb to 74,000 - 75,000 VND/kg. Meanwhile, the price of pork loin has also increased to 94,000 - 95,000 VND/kg, even high-quality pork reaches 100,000 VND/head. Pork products have also fluctuated, such as ham and pork chops at 90,000 VND/kg, ham ranges from 65,000 - 75,000 VND/kg, and lean pork reaches 120,000 VND/kg.
According to Mr. Nguyen Kim Doan, Vice President of Dong Nai Livestock Association, at the end of 2024, Dong Nai - the largest pig farming area in the country - implemented a policy of relocating thousands of pig farms out of residential areas and areas that are not suitable for planning, leading to a decrease in the total pig herd in this province compared to the previous year. In addition, African swine fever also caused significant damage, especially to small-scale farmers, causing many farms to stop operating.
Mr. Doan emphasized: “The price of live pigs only needs to reach 63,000 - 65,000 VND/kg to be enough for farmers to make good profits. With the current selling price, farmers can expect to restore their herds in the near future.”
At supermarkets and pork stores belonging to market stabilization enterprises in Ho Chi Minh City, pork prices remain stable. Some items such as ribless pork belly are priced at VND71,000/300 gram tray, baby back ribs are sold at VND109,000/400 gram tray...
Mr. Phan Van Dung, Deputy General Director of Vissan Company, said that since February 12, the company has purchased live pigs at VND 72,000/kg, an increase of VND 5,000/kg compared to the stable price applied from December 30, 2024.
"Due to the price stabilization regulations and low purchasing power at the beginning of the year, the only solution we can implement is to 'try' but cannot increase prices" - Mr. Dung shared.
The leader of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade said that currently, some businesses have proposed adjusting the selling prices of products under the market stabilization program, including pork. However, according to the previous commitment, prices will be kept stable for a period of one month before and one month after Tet, so it is not possible to adjust prices at this time.
