Experts say that domestic coffee prices are still heavily influenced by the international market. Coffee growers are therefore unable to take the initiative in the face of price fluctuations. The constantly “dancing” coffee prices not only make farmers nervous but also increase risks in production.

In addition, to help farmers reduce their dependence on traders or external fluctuations, they should link up with cooperatives, roasters, and export enterprises to form a tight production and consumption chain to get better prices. Take advantage of price insurance tools with linked enterprises to avoid risks when prices drop sharply. In the long term, it is necessary to increase the value of coffee beans through deep processing and brand building.

Mr. Thai Nhu Hiep - Vice President of the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (VICOFA) said that currently, exporting enterprises must proactively manage price risks using financial instruments such as futures contracts and options on the London and New York exchanges. Furthermore, it is necessary to expand the market, reduce dependence on a few large customers to avoid price pressure or invest in deep processing to increase value, instead of exporting raw coffee beans.

Climate change is having a negative impact on coffee crops in the world’s leading producers such as Brazil and Vietnam. Extreme weather events such as drought, frost, and erratic heavy rains have a strong impact on coffee production and quality, leading to price fluctuations.
