These days, the atmosphere at Vinh Truong fishing port (Nha Trang city, Khanh Hoa province) is even more bustling because of the bumper anchovy harvest. The anchovy season has created jobs for hundreds of women in Khanh Hoa coastal areas. |
Every day, these women often do different jobs such as: housekeepers, construction workers, scrap collectors… with unstable income. It is the anchovy season, fishermen and traders need to hire more workers so they come here to look for work. |
The job many older women choose is sorting anchovies. Dozens of people are divided into small groups and the anchovies are sorted by size. |
Although the job does not require heavy lifting, it is not easy to keep your hands moving quickly in water and ice. |
Ms. Le Thi My Dong (65 years old, in Vinh Truong ward) said that she was hired to do this job with a salary of 25,000 VND/hour, this time she earned an average of 100,000 - 200,000 VND per day. There were days when there were no fish, so she had to go home empty-handed and find another job. |
As soon as the anchovies were brought ashore, women were waiting to do the work. Some of them had been waiting for the ship since 1am, hoping to earn extra income during the anchovy season. |
Some younger, healthier people choose to carry fish for hire. Trays of fresh, heavy fish are moved from the boat to the market by the women. |
Ms. Hoang Thi Thu (46 years old, in Vinh Truong ward) shared: "I work as a construction worker but have been unemployed for a while now and no one has hired me. Luckily, there was a fish harvest so I came here to work to earn some money to take care of my husband and children." |
Anchovies are caught close to shore, so fishermen usually leave the port the previous afternoon and return to the port the next morning to sell the fish. |
Anchovies are bought and sold busily as soon as they arrive. After being sorted, trays of anchovies are immediately transported to small markets to preserve their freshness and sell to consumers. |
Some women also earn a living by mending fishing nets after each trip at sea. Although mending fishing nets is light work, it requires the mender to sit from morning to evening, making their bodies sore. |
Many people have taken advantage of the shade under the bougainvillea trees to mend nets. From these simple, hard jobs, coastal women have nurtured many children's dreams. |
