Similar to social media, artificial intelligence (AI) may be one of the technologies that makes people feel worse.

It's been more than two years since OpenAI launched ChatGPT. Since then, the chatbot has continued to grow and now attracts more than 400 million monthly users worldwide.

While ChatGPT helps people be more productive, it may also contribute to feelings of loneliness, according to a study by OpenAI and the MIT Media Lab, which analyzed millions of text conversations and hundreds of thousands of audio interactions between users and ChatGPT. They also surveyed 4,000 users about their chatbot usage.

In a separate study, the MIT Media Lab tracked the engagement of 1,000 users with ChatGPT for four weeks. The researchers collected data from both private and non-private conversations, via text and voice.

Research shows that feelings of loneliness and social isolation are influenced by many different factors, but ChatGPT may exacerbate these conditions in frequent users.

The MIT Media Lab found that while most participants only chatted with the chatbot for short periods of time, a small group spent a significant amount of time interacting.

People who use chatbots more frequently tend to have higher levels of loneliness and dependence, and engage in less social interactions.

Researchers also found that ChatGPT's voice mode helped users feel less lonely. However, people who were already lonely tended to overuse the tool, making their situation worse.

Both studies were conducted on ChatGPT using the GPT-4o model. Last month, OpenAI introduced GPT-4.5, an improved version with more intuitive and emotionally intelligent capabilities.
