Columbia University has suspended Chungin "Roy" Lee for one year for publishing "unauthorized documents" about a meeting with the school and posting photos of school staff on social media, according to a school disciplinary document obtained by Insider . Lee signed an agreement not to disclose disciplinary records or recordings online.

“Update: I was fired,” Lee told Insider after receiving the news.

A school spokesman declined to comment.

Lee’s Interview Coder is an “invisible” AI tool that helps candidates cheat on technical interview questions. The startup sells the tool for $60 a month. Before the suspension, the 21-year-old student said his startup was on track to generate $2 million in annual revenue.

Lee’s tool is based on generative AI models that can write code, edit code, and explain the results to candidates in detail. The AI analyzes both oral and written questions and writes code on the fly. The process is fast and real-time.

Most importantly, the interviewer is completely unaware that the candidate is cheating. According to Interview Coder’s website, the tool is immune to the software detection features available on Zoom or Google Meet.

The disciplinary record says the school initiated a disciplinary review after Lee developed the tool and posted a video of himself using it to pass an Amazon interview in December 2024. Lee and his partner said they had read the academic handbook before building and marketing the tool. Students are not allowed to use it to cheat on classwork.

Lee expressed surprise that technical interviews were outside the school's jurisdiction, but the school decided to take a stance on this.

Lee attended his first disciplinary meeting on February 17, thinking the situation would be resolved peacefully. There, he was asked about a hypothetical situation where AI tools were used in the classroom.

Before receiving the results of the first meeting, Lee submitted a leave of absence request.

Columbia University placed Lee on probation after determining he was responsible for facilitating academic dishonesty. The school said the tool could be used to cheat on exams.

“A week and a half later, I was expelled from the school completely,” Lee wrote on LinkedIn.
