According to Live Science, an anonymous man in Australia used a cheap metal detector and discovered a rock containing a huge amount of gold. The location where he found the rock was in the area known as the “Golden Triangle” in the state of Victoria. In the 1800s, this area was the epicenter of the Australian gold rush.
The man took the rock to a nearby gold dealer, Lucky Strike Gold, in Geelong, for appraisal. Knowing the rock contained a large amount of gold, he asked if it was worth $10,000.
Darren Kamp, the store owner, said it was worth much more. At the time, the man only brought half of the rock, leaving the other half at home. They put the two halves together and found that it weighed more than 4.6 kg, and the rock contained a huge amount of gold, about 2.6 kg.
At the current price of gold in Australia, the rock contains about $160,000 worth of gold. Kamp said that in his 43 years of gold mining, he has never seen a rock containing so much gold.

In 2013, an Australian gold miner also found a 177-ounce gold nugget worth $295,000 in Ballarat. In 2020, another group of gold miners found two gold nuggets worth $250,000 near Tarnagulla.
According to the store owner, the man used a $1,200 metal detector and discovered the gold nugget 0.3m underground in the “golden triangle” area between Bendigo, St Arnaudsome and Ballarat. After valuing the nugget, Camp bought it from the amateur gold miner.
He has named the giant nugget “Lucky Strike Nugget” and is considering selling it as a collector's item.
“The only regret is that the rock was broken in half. But because it was broken, we could see a lot of gold inside,” he said.
