Young engineer aspires to bring Vietnamese technology to international level

Mr. Hoang Khac Hieu was honored as Outstanding Young Vietnamese Face 2024.

Listening to the presentation on Traffic Monitoring Solution integrating AI on cameras and 5G technology by Vietnamese engineers at the Dubai Financial Center, international experts and customers were surprised: "I didn't expect Vietnam to be able to make such a product."

In front of admiring eyes, happiness and pride constantly welled up in the young engineer's heart, because the solution had conquered the strict standards of one of the world's leading technology markets, affirming the Vietnamese technology brand, and being mentioned with respect by international friends. In that moment, the young engineer decided to "dream bigger dreams": Bringing Vietnamese technology further, positioning Vietnamese intelligence on the world technology map.

Engineer Hoang Khac Hieu, born in 1996, Head of Development Department 2 at Government Solutions Center, Viettel Enterprise Solutions Corporation.

Six years of building and developing hundreds of projects, Mr. Hoang Khac Hieu always wants to contribute his knowledge and youth to the development of the country. The overnight messages, the online meetings that span thousands of kilometers, the detailed data analysis reports, the long field trips, the recording of customer requests... are so hard, but Hieu and his colleagues "don't mind".

Sharing about his career, Hieu shared that at first, he wanted to become a software and application developer. However, his internship at Viettel Group opened up new opportunities. In 2019, Mr. Khac Hieu joined Viettel Enterprise Solutions Corporation, which was a major turning point.

Just one week after entering the new environment, the young engineer received the task: Directly surveying customer needs, deploying the system and training users with a scale of about 40 people. Without any time to hesitate or worry, Mr. Khac Hieu quickly got to work, directly facing customers, taking responsibility for a real system.

Field trips with the desire to create technological products that meet customer requirements.

The first business trip took the young engineer to Ninh Thuan (where the traffic violation monitoring project was being implemented). Under the harsh sun of the Central region, the young engineer directly met, analyzed and advised customers on advanced technologies... He also participated in the implementation of the monitoring system at 3 key intersections of Phan Rang - Thap Cham City; and taught training courses for traffic police on how to operate the system.

“This was the first time I had to present, instruct on how to control the system and answer questions in front of a large number of traffic police officers and public security officers. At first, I was a bit nervous, but thanks to careful preparation, the instruction session went smoothly... everyone felt and operated the system, making me proud and confident...”. The first steps in his career were not easy, but for Mr. Khac Hieu, they were valuable experiences, laying the foundation for the future journey. And the Traffic Monitoring Solution integrating AI on cameras and 5G technology began to be deployed in practice in the Smart City ecosystem.

“For me, it is not simply a project, but a 'brainchild' that has been nurtured and cared for since the very first days. From a small-scale product, through many upgrades, optimizations and expansions, the system has grown to become one of the unit's key products, an intelligent traffic ecosystem capable of monitoring, sanctioning and managing traffic order on a large scale, currently deployed for more than 30 projects across Vietnam and internationally, bringing in revenue of 200 billion VND...

It was a journey of long nights of research, failed experiments and then starting over, and moments of joy when the final solution worked smoothly. Above all, I have grown through each project and always carried within me the desire to create and contribute real values ​​to society...", Mr. Hoang Khac Hieu confided.

Mr. Hoang Khac Hieu received the Smartcity Award with his product of a system to monitor and handle violations of traffic order and safety.

Every journey brings valuable lessons. For Mr. Hoang Khac Hieu, one of the most important lessons comes not only from technology, but also from the human approach, understanding customers and real needs before writing lines of code. The Hai Phong ITS Smart Traffic Ecosystem project is one of the most memorable experiences.

Mr. Hoang Khac Hieu changed his approach, volunteering to lead a small group, going directly to the local area to work with customers, listening to their real difficulties. “The days of working closely with the field helped us realize that the problem is not the technology, but the way the technology is applied. We started to adjust the product, add more practical features, proactively explain clearly the operating mechanism of the system to customers…”, Mr. Khac Hieu shared.

A month later, the product was gradually completed, and customer feedback also changed positively. Users no longer saw the system as a strange tool, but realized its value in their daily work. The project was successfully signed, opening up the opportunity to deploy a solution for the ITS Smart Traffic ecosystem worth 119 billion in Hai Phong. For the young engineer, it was a profound lesson: No matter how advanced technology is, it will be meaningless if it does not come from real needs. A product is only truly successful when it solves technical and human problems.

Software development engineer Nguyen Hoang Thong has many compliments for Mr. Hoang Khac Hieu.

Mr. Nguyen Hoang Thong, Software Development Engineer, working at Development Department 2 of the Government Solution Center shared: “Hieu is a man of work. When difficult requests are given, Hieu is not afraid to take the plunge, always proactively works in groups, thinks about problems, and is willing to work overtime to solve the problem…”.

During the days when the whole country was struggling to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, the transportation of essential goods faced many difficulties. Mr. Hoang Khac Hieu and 6 members were assigned to develop the "Green Channel" project for the Ministry of Construction (Ministry of Transport before the merger), with only 2 weeks to design and deploy a complete system. Hieu and his teammates still worked tirelessly through the night, facing the risk of infection. The office became the "headquarters", where everyone was united in the goal: Complete the project in the shortest time.

After 2 weeks of racing against time, the "Green Channel" project officially came into operation, allowing drivers to conveniently register for travel routes, helping authorities control information quickly and accurately.

“Standing in front of the screen watching the statistics updated every minute, witnessing thousands of vehicles licensed after only a few hours of operation, we understand that every effort is worth it. 'Green Stream' is not only a technology project, but also a testament to the sense of responsibility, dedication and determination of the whole team. In the most difficult times, technology becomes the key to opening the way for solutions that bring real value to society,” Hoang Khac Hieu shared.

Recognizing the contributions and efforts of Hoang Khac Hieu, Deputy Director of the Government Solutions Center, Viettel Enterprise Solutions Corporation Dao Xuan Truong expressed: “Comrade Hoang Khac Hieu is a person with a strong point in technology, the Corporation has assigned Hieu to be in charge of Development Department 2, researching and producing new products and researching and improving new production processes and methods of the Corporation. We always trust and assign new and difficult tasks to Comrade Hieu, creating opportunities for him to hone his skills and expertise…”.
