Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri has hailed the positive impact of the Ryder Cup golf tournament on the country's tourism industry, stressing the importance of hosting major events.
According to the Italian Tourism Ministry, as of September 25, about 58% of hotel rooms in the central Lazio region, which includes Rome, were booked through online channels. This is the highest occupancy rate of any region and much higher than the national monthly average of 45.5%.
Previously, the highest hotel occupancy rates were always in the Campania region - a tourist hub famous for its Amalfi Coast beaches, Capri and Ischia islands - and the Tuscany region with attractive tourist destinations such as Florence, Siena and Chianti.
