Shifting crop structure towards commodity production

Implementing the Project on Restructuring the Agricultural Sector, in recent years, the provincial Department of Agriculture together with local authorities have strengthened guidance for farmers to apply advances in science and technology in all stages of production, processing, preservation and consumption of products; encouraged the shift in crop structure towards commodity production to improve productivity, product quality, and ensure food security.

Vinh Phuc province has over 8,300 hectares of perennial crops and over 83,000 hectares of annual crops. To improve crop productivity and quality, the Department of Agriculture has guided localities to convert the structure of varieties and crops to those with high economic efficiency and form safe vegetable and fruit production areas according to VietGap process.

In 2024 alone, the whole province has converted over 585 hectares of unstable rice cultivation area, with no water supply, low productivity to growing crops with high economic efficiency or rice cultivation combined with aquaculture. In particular, the province has gradually formed concentrated commodity cultivation areas, with links between production and consumption such as: red-fleshed dragon fruit areas, concentrated pumpkin production, and vegetable specialized areas. In addition, many high-tech agricultural production models have been formed in the province with outstanding economic efficiency.

To ensure food security and export, the agricultural sector is directing localities to continue expanding the area of ​​high-value crops with markets such as flowers, fruit trees, medicinal plants, and at the same time developing production according to the chain linked with building product brands.

Along with that, review and adjust the plan to convert crop structure in accordance with advantages, market demand and adapt to climate change; promote the application of mechanization in production to improve productivity, quality and added value of agricultural products, contributing to building the province's agriculture in the direction of "Ecological agriculture, modern countryside, smart farmers".
