70 years ago, Doc Lap Hill was a stronghold located in the northeast of Dien Bien district basin, about 4km from Muong Thanh center, about 700m long and 200m wide. Here, the French army deployed many strong firepowers and elite battalions that had fought and remained undefeated in many places around the world. While the enemy was still stunned by the fall of the Him Lam stronghold, on the night of March 14 to 15, 1954, our army attacked the enemy's stronghold on Doc Lap Hill, a stronghold considered to be the "best defense" in the Dien Bien Phu stronghold complex.
The battle lasted until 6:30 a.m. on March 15, 1954, when it ended. Our troops completely controlled the Doc Lap stronghold; killed about 200 enemies, captured 370 enemy soldiers, and seized many weapons of all kinds. To win, our troops sacrificed 137 soldiers and injured 193 others. Along with the Him Lam victory, the Doc Lap victory pushed the enemy into a passive position, forcing the enemy in Keo village to surrender, destroying the strongest resistance nests of the northern sub-sector, opening up a new situation and battle position that was favorable to us. At the same time, the victory created momentum and determination for units on the entire front to continue attacking the Dien Bien Phu stronghold.
When the historic Dien Bien Phu campaign ended, Doc Lap stronghold was a desolate battlefield, the ground was plowed by bombs and bullets, with trenches and trenches crisscrossed, barbed wire, shell casings, artillery, bombs and mines scattered about. In later years, this place was managed by the State as a point in the Dien Bien Phu battlefield relic complex.
After the liberation of Dien Bien, the people of the villages and hamlets around Doc Lap stronghold united, healed the wounds of war, and competed to develop production. With the support of the State, schools, medical stations, etc. were gradually built to serve the people's lives. The new lives of the people revived and gradually improved on the land that had been plowed by bombs and bullets in the past.
Having lived in Doc Lap since childhood, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Ba, Doc Lap village, Thanh Nua commune, has witnessed many changes in this land. Mr. Ba shared: In the past, people's lives were difficult, the landscape was wild, dirt roads or gravel roads were the main ones, and houses were makeshift. Up to now, thanks to many policies of the State, the lives of ethnic people have changed significantly, roads have been concreted to every alley, cultural houses have been built, and houses have been built spaciously and close together. Households from difficult lives have risen up to develop the economy, actively participating in the movement to build new rural areas, and their material and spiritual lives have increasingly improved.
Mr. Dinh The Da, Head of the Front Work Committee of Doc Lap village, said: Doc Lap village has 146 households and 562 households. Previously, the number of poor households in the village was high, but through the launching of emulation movements to build new rural areas, people have actively built economic models, risen out of poverty, and united to participate in the village's movements. Currently, Doc Lap village has only 1 near-poor household, 80% of households are well-off. People in the village not only farm, but many households develop garden-pond-barn economic models and do business. In the construction of new rural areas, when building roads and cultural houses, many households have voluntarily donated land, labor, and money. Among them is the family of Mr. Vu Van Thuan. In 2017, when the village Party Cell came to mobilize, the family donated 238m2 of land to build a village cultural house so that people have a place to live.
Thanh Nua today is no longer poor or backward, the people of the villages and hamlets are actively striving to get rich. The commune is building a model of production association groups, ensuring food hygiene and safety; transforming the production structure, applying scientific advances in commodity production, creating a direction in economic development for the people.
Mr. Luong Van Hia, Standing Deputy Secretary of Thanh Nua Commune Party Committee, said: Currently, the whole commune has 457 households and 4,500 people. In 2017, the commune was recognized as meeting new rural standards and had 2 model new rural villages, Men and Thanh Binh - Co Rom; the poverty rate decreased to 2.1%, the average income reached over 42 million VND/person/year. The economic indicators of the following year were higher than the previous year. Currently, the area of grain crops in the commune is 522.8 hectares, the output reached 3,289 tons; transportation, health care, and education are all convenient. People in the commune actively participate in the movement "All people unite to build a cultural life in residential areas", building advanced new rural areas.
After 70 years, Thanh Nua has transformed strongly with a new look. The change is thanks to the solidarity and unity of the entire Party, government and people in economic development, poverty reduction, and maintaining security and order in the area.
