Crossing landslides and floods every day

Mr. Nguyen Van An (in Ha Giang) still goes to the city area to work every day, a distance of 30km/trip. He has been doing this job for 2 years, providing a steady income.

"I work as an office worker, the job is not too hard. But to stick with this job, I accept having to travel far," An shared.

For this worker, having a job with a stable income is the most important thing. Other difficulties can be adapted to and overcome gradually.

Working as an office worker with an income of nearly 5 million/month, Mr. An said, compared to the general level of the area, this is not a low salary. Every day, if he does not ask for a ride from a colleague's car, he rides his motorbike to work.

On his daily backpacking trip, he fears the rainy days the most. Because the roads in Ha Giang have their own characteristics, heavy rain often leads to landslides.

"Usually when moving, if someone in front announces that the river water is rising, those who have not crossed will not go anymore or have to prepare their belongings to row to the other side," Mr. An shared.

According to Mr. An, finding a suitable job locally is not easy. Therefore, despite the difficult commute, he still appreciates and is committed to his job.

More than just salary

Friends in the company, Ms. Nguyen Thi Quyen (in Dang Xa Urban Area, Gia Lam, Hanoi) still jokingly call her the "office backpacker". For the past 2 years, every day she regularly travels 20km/trip from Gia Lam district to Thanh Xuan district to work.

When she quit her old job, she also thought about finding a job near home to make the commute easier. However, the jobs she liked were all in the city center, and the jobs near home did not have a good income.

After interviewing for a job position, salary, and bonus at a genuine watch distribution company, Ms. Quyen was extremely hesitant about whether to "close" the job here because the office was even further away than her old workplace. Having to travel dozens of kilometers a day, just thinking about it made her feel discouraged.

Urged by circumstances, she decided to test her endurance with a new working environment. Then she gradually got used to moving far away. Moreover, the working environment without time constraints and friendly colleagues are also some of the factors that help her want to stick with this place.

Every day, she has to wake up early to prepare breakfast for her family, then mentally prepare to overcome the long distance, with many miserable traffic jams on the journey through the city center. Every day, she spends at least 2 hours on the road.

"On my first days at work, I had to take a deep breath before I dared to take my motorbike out of the house and start my journey of weaving through the few spaces on the road. Every day I had to go through many long traffic jams," said Ms. Quyen.

Working far away and in unpredictable weather is her biggest fear. On cold winter days, she is burdened with scarves, gloves, etc. But that is still not as hard as on hot sunny days or stormy rainy days.

Ms. Quyen said: "On days when it rains heavily, pouring down on my face. When I cross Vinh Tuy bridge to go to the inner city, the wind is so strong that it almost blows the car away, the steering wheel wobbles for a while, but I still have to try to keep going."

There were days when it rained heavily and she could not continue moving. She had to wait for hours under the bridge. She was soaked to the skin and felt uncomfortable. At that time, she just wished that she could go to work nearby to make it less tiring.

In the trunk of her car, she always keeps slippers and a few extra sets of wet or dirty clothes... in case the weather changes unexpectedly.

"I spend many hours a day traveling on the road, so my time to take care of my family and children is limited. Traveling long distances directly affects my health, the biggest problem is back pain," Ms. Quyen lamented.

However, the motivation for her to overcome the barriers of working far away is to have an income to support her family. "The working environment is comfortable, not too time-constrained, colleagues are extremely friendly, close-knit, sharing, and caring. Going to work not only provides income but also is very fun," Ms. Quyen explained.
