Nguyen Thi Anh Tuyet
Growing up in a difficult family situation, Anh Tuyet always tried to study hard and then won a scholarship to study English at Nguyen Chi Thanh High School for the Gifted (Dak Nong) and then a full scholarship to Minerva University, a school with an admission rate of 1%.
"Education is the starting point that helps me do unimaginable things, for myself and society. Therefore, I want to give you learning opportunities and turning points and steps forward, so that everyone can go further with their own efforts. At the same time, in some projects, I also ask you to commit to supporting the community in the same way you have been supported," the 21-year-old female student confided.
Currently, Anh Tuyet and her colleagues organize a series of free online seminars on the topic of building study abroad profiles by profession, with speakers being young intellectuals who have won full scholarships at prestigious universities such as Harvard, Stanford, Duke... In addition, her team is also managing community groups on studying abroad, research, and startups, attracting tens of thousands of members. All are free.
According to Anh Tuyet, many Vietnamese students lack access to development opportunities. Therefore, young Vietnamese intellectuals abroad can bring skills, opportunities and resources from abroad back to Vietnam.
Community "pioneer" shares
Competing with more than 850 applications globally, Tran Thanh Vu (32 years old) was the only candidate awarded a full PhD scholarship by the UK Economic and Social Sciences Council (ESRC) to study at the Faculty of Education, Durham University in 2022.
Tran Thanh Vu
Oriented towards English pedagogy since university, Mr. Vu graduated with a bachelor's degree from Saigon University, then a master's degree through an international joint program between Ho Chi Minh City Open University and the University of Southern Queensland (Australia) at the age of 24. Although he had the intention of continuing his doctorate from this time, it was not until 7 years later that he was able to realize his dream, the reason being that he had no... research experience.
"To enhance my scientific resume, while I was a high school teacher, I still studied on my own, did research, and presented at domestic and international conferences. But despite continuously applying to dozens of universities in Australia, England, New Zealand, etc., I was rejected or dropped out of the scholarship. But these "missteps" are not as important as what I learn and how I try next time, and this is my advice," Mr. Vu shared.
Mr. Vu founded and runs the English Teaching Research Collaboration Network (TERECONET), and supports the building of the English Teacher Community (People of TESOL). These are non-profit organizations and projects in Vietnam that specialize in organizing professional development activities for the English teacher community, attracting thousands of teachers to participate.
According to Mr. Vu, Vietnamese education is still not equal to the world in many aspects. In these aspects, young Vietnamese intellectuals abroad can support.
