The price of live goats in Dong Nai province is increasing sharply, making goat farmers excited. However, the locality recommends that people be careful to avoid massively increasing their herds, which can easily lead to supply exceeding demand, causing goat prices to fall sharply again.

Farmers excited about high goat prices

In Dong Nai province, the price of live goats is increasing sharply. Currently, the price of male goats at the farm is at 150,000 VND/kg; female goats are 120,000 VND/kg. The price of male breeding goats is even higher at 170,000 VND/kg and 135,000 VND/kg for female goats.

The high price of goats has both small-scale farmers and large-scale farms excited to increase their herds to increase income.

Ms. Vo Thi Tam in Xuan Tay commune (Cam My district) said that before Tet, she sold 30 goats for over 130,000 VND/kg. Each goat brought in a profit of over 1.5 million VND.

After each sale, she would wait a while before restocking the herd. However, the price of live goats continued to increase after Tet. She bought 50 more breeding goats to continue raising, bringing the total herd to more than 70.

Mrs. Tam said that raising goats is a profitable business. Goat food is easy to find, from agricultural by-products in the garden. Goat manure is also used to fertilize plants. Each year, her herd of goats helps her earn hundreds of millions of dong.

In Nhan Nghia commune (Cam My district), Ms. Truong Thi Quyen has a herd of 19 goats. Unlike the fattening method that requires large investments, Ms. Quyen chooses to raise them on a small scale.

Small-scale farming does not require much investment in solid barns. The main source of food for goats is leaves and agricultural by-products, without using industrial feed, so raising costs are significantly reduced.

Raising goats this way takes longer than fattening. The goats are less likely to get sick. The kids are raised from a young age until they are sold.

"I definitely make a profit on every goat I sell because it's all about the effort. If I sell an average goat weighing about 30kg, I'll make a profit of more than 2 million VND," said Ms. Quyen.

Be careful to re-herd when seeing goat prices increase

In Bao Quang commune (Long Khanh city), Mr. Vo Nguyen Thuan has a goat farm to fatten 50 goats. In the previous batch, he sold 40 goats, earning 1 million VND per goat.

Mr. Thuan said that it is rare to see goat prices increase to this level. He hopes that goat prices can remain high for many more months. Because to restore the herd, it takes at least half a year for the goat kids to have enough volume to sell.

According to traders in the Long Khanh area, goat prices have increased slightly because many years ago, prices were too low, causing farmers to abandon their herds. Therefore, there are not many goats left.

While the demand for goat meat is increasing, the local goat herd is not enough to supply restaurants and food establishments in Dong Nai and neighboring provinces such as Binh Duong and Ho Chi Minh City.

Mr. Le Viet Long - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Bao Quang commune said that in the locality, the number of goat-raising households is only about 100, down more than half compared to the peak.

Goats mature in about 3-4 months. Female goats give birth to 1 to 2 litters per year, each litter has 2-3 kids with a survival rate of almost 100%.

Farmers are hoping that the good prices will continue for a long time, making up for the difficult times when prices are too low. However, due to the lack of supply, finding goats for breeding is not easy.

Mr. Pham Khac Tuy, a goat farmer in Xuan Tay commune (Cam My district) said that goat prices are increasing so many households are re-raising their goats. Mr. Tuy plans to increase his herd to 120 goats. Currently, he has only released a new batch of more than 40 goats.

Mr. Tuy said that breeding goats are very rare now due to lack of supply. Mr. Tuy had to wait, then go to many places to buy, even buying small quantities at a time to meet the expected quantity.

Mr. Nguyen Van Dung - Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Xuan Tay Commune (Cam My District) said that raising goats is a model with high economic efficiency. The whole commune has developed a total herd of about 50,000 goats.

Every year, the locality organizes training courses on goat raising techniques for farmers. The Farmer Support Fund provides capital support for the Goat Raising Project associated with crop cultivation to replicate the model.

However, the price of breeding goats is currently very high. Therefore, the locality recommends that people be cautious and not re-herd massively. "At the same time, people should pay attention to safety measures in livestock farming to avoid the risk of disease," said Mr. Dung.
