Recently, Ha Long Bay (Quang Ninh) - Cat Ba Archipelago (Hai Phong) along with 99 other locations of 53 countries around the world, were officially recognized as International Geosciences Heritage by the International Union of Geological Sciences.
The Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago International Geoheritage was recognized for its two outstanding global values of geological history and karst geomorphology (geomorphology of characteristic disintegration patterns often marked by underground cave drainage systems).

Accordingly, Cat Ba archipelago (Hai Phong) is an excellent model of a mature karst landscape in hot and humid tropical monsoon conditions and in the recent past was invaded and transformed by the sea. Ha Long Bay (Quang Ninh) has a diversity of topographical elements such as: mountainous islands interspersed with deep sea bays, the contrast of coastal mangrove forests and limestone islands with steep cliffs.
Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago includes all stages of marine submergence of tropical karst as well as three main cave types (ancient marine frog-jaw caves, ancient karst caves and frog-jaw caves). Ha Long Bay represents the later stages of marine submergence. Cat Ba Archipelago adds important geological values to the heritage through its examples of terrestrial and intertidal stages.
The appearance of the Ha Long Bay - Cat Ba Archipelago area and its unique and famous geological and geomorphological values today are the result of a regional tectonic movement that lasted more than 500 million years.

Ha Long Bay has been recognized twice by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage (in 1994 and 2000). In 2023, Ha Long Bay - Cat Ba Archipelago will also be recognized by UNESCO as the first inter-provincial - municipal World Natural Heritage in Vietnam.
The recognition of Ha Long Bay - Cat Ba Archipelago as an International Geological Heritage once again affirms the value of this heritage.
The International Union of Geological Sciences announced the list of 100 Global Geoheritage Sites at the 37th International Geological Congress (IGC) held from August 25-31 in Busan (South Korea).
