Two children died and nine were injured, six of them critically, after a stabbing at a dance class in Southport, northwest England, the Independent reported on July 30. Two adults are in critical condition.
The suspect, a 17-year-old boy born in Cardiff, Wales, living in the village of Banks in Lancashire, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the attack.
The stabbing took place on 29 July at a yoga and dance class for children aged between six and 11 at Hart Space in Southport, Merseyside. Two teachers were injured while trying to protect the children.
The motive for the incident remains unclear, but it is not currently being treated as terrorism-related although North West England Counter Terrorism Police have offered to assist local police forces with their investigation.
King Charles III sent his “sincerest condolences” to the families and loved ones of the victims, while Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the events in Southport were “truly horrific” and had left the nation shocked.
