Russia's ambassador to London, Andrey Kelin, said Britain should focus on avoiding confrontation, rather than considering the possibility of a military conflict between the two countries.

Speaking after attending a ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the end of the Siege of Leningrad in World War II, Mr Kelin said: "Today, in a tense political environment, we suddenly heard a call to prepare for a war with Russia in an uncertain future. We knew about it and took note of it. We gave no reason for this.

In this regard, it is important that young politicians know, study and remember the lessons of history. No one has ever defeated us. This is very important. Most British people remember very clearly the fact that it was the Soviet Union, together with its allies, that made the decisive contribution to our victory over Nazi Germany."

The Russian Ambassador shared: "Our President (Vladimir Putin), when receiving credentials from the new British Ambassador to Moscow Nigel Casey, said that the interaction during those difficult years laid the foundation for creating new global relations.

I would say that today it is not necessary to think about a potential war against Russia, but how to get out of this spiral of confrontation and establish a renewed system of international relations based on equality, mutual respect and concern for security interests.
