Women in the IT industry are supported in their studies and work and given opportunities to try out many positions to prove their abilities, according to Ms. Nguyen Lan Anh - manager at FPT Software.
Recently, at a conference, Ms. Chu Thi Thanh Ha - Chairman of FPT Software said that the first batch of students in the Information Technology major at FPT University had only 5% women. In 2022, this number reached 14%, which is an increase but still modest. FPT Software also has only 31% female staff.
Being in this small group, after four years of studying at FPT University and more than 10 years working for FPT Software, Ms. Lan Anh affirmed that studying and working in the information technology industry is not difficult for women.
"During my studies, I was favored by many teachers and staff. Female students are also encouraged to participate in movement activities. At FPT University, when participating in the movement, students will have their training points counted in their activity achievements," she added.

While working at FPT Software, Lan Anh did not encounter any barriers of "gender prejudice" in this corporate environment. The female manager born in 1991 recounted that she graduated in 2013 but had been working part-time at FPT Software since 2011, before the school's official internship period.
After graduating, Lan Anh continued to sign a contract with the company. Maintaining the spirit of being ready to seize every opportunity from her internship, in more than 10 years of working here, every three years, she changed positions to try her hand at a new task or field. Thanks to that, the girl born in 1991 was able to do many jobs, continuously learn new things, and participate in a series of projects worth millions of USD of the company. Currently, she is the Head of Project Management Support for FPT Software.
In 2012, the female manager was in the top 100 outstanding employees of FPT Software. By 2020, she continued to be recognized and entered the top 100 best employees of FPT Corporation.
Lan Anh said that when she chose to study information technology at FPT University, her family forbade her from studying. The female student had to hide from her parents to take the entrance exam before taking the general university entrance exam in July.
After receiving her admission letter and a 50% scholarship from the school, she began to convince her parents to let her study. After many years of studying, working and being recognized at school and company, up to now, her family has fully supported her decision at that time.
"It's great for women working in IT. Colleagues and superiors are not prejudiced or harsh. Leaders always create opportunities and empower female employees who demonstrate their abilities to develop themselves," she added.

To affirm her ability, Ms. Lan Anh said that she had equipped herself with three core elements since her university days, including: professional foundation, foreign languages and soft skills.
According to her, the curriculum at FPT University is quite heavy, with a ratio of 60% theory and 40% practice. Right after the first major semester, from 6 female students, her class only had two people left. The teachers' teaching methods are also diverse and help students remember for a long time and understand the essence. Among them, she was most impressed with Mr. Phan Dang Cau when he taught students to code on paper. Instead of making software, the system will detect and report errors, students working on paper must remember each period, comma or space.
However, if students pass the school's requirements, they can adapt to real work quickly. The female manager commented that remembering and knowing all the knowledge in the university program is impossible, but FPT University has a teaching method of providing "keywords". From there, students can learn and research more so that knowledge truly becomes their "asset".
During the working process, this also helps a lot. When participating in discussions with leaders, colleagues, partners..., hearing about any field, most of the personnel from FPT University can grasp the "keyword" and then, self-study, cultivate, and supplement knowledge.
"In a business environment, if you don't understand what the other person is saying, you can fall behind many others, and at the same time, it's difficult to adapt and learn quickly," she emphasized.
Regarding foreign languages, the former FPT University student studied English and Japanese in parallel according to the school's compulsory curriculum. For Lan Anh, Japanese is the most difficult subject, especially when having to study it in parallel with English and programming languages. However, she always tries to overcome it because Japan is one of the most potential markets for many technology companies in Vietnam, including FPT Software.
In addition, during her time at FPT University, Lan Anh actively participated in extracurricular activities to improve her soft skills. Right from her first year, she supported the school's admissions consulting work. With her practical experience, the female student at that time "changed" the prejudices of many parents, helping young people pursue their dreams of technology. At the same time, she also founded many clubs such as iGo, guitar...
"These activities help me improve my communication, persuasion, problem-solving, and coordination skills... The school has soft skills courses, but just studying is not enough. Students need to apply knowledge to practice," she added.
In addition, she also emphasized the important role of self-learning skills. Although holding a management position at one of the largest technology companies in Vietnam, Lan Anh still plans to learn more, thereby developing a project management team.
