Story of Professor Vo Hanh

During his 40 years of work, he has contributed to training thousands of Bachelors of Biology and Bachelors of Biology, especially directly guiding and successfully defending 35 Masters and 4 PhDs in Botany.


Prof. Dr. Vo Hanh is a former Senior Lecturer and Head of the Biology Department at Vinh University. He has made many contributions and dedication to the cause of education and training in Vietnam.

Traditional homeland of studiousness

Born on February 20, 1948 in Van Lam village, Duc Lam commune (now Lam Trung Thuy commune), Duc Tho district, Ha Tinh province, Professor Vo Hanh is the 11th generation descendant of the Vo family (commonly known as Vo Duong).

Growing up in a family with a rich revolutionary tradition, his father was Mr. Vo Co (alias Vu Co) and his uncle was Mr. Vo Duong, both of whom were recognized by the Ha Tinh Provincial Party Committee as "Formerly a grassroots cadre in Duc Lam commune (Duc Tho, Ha Tinh), a revolutionary activist before 1945".

His studious hometown and his family with a rich revolutionary tradition are the foundation, motivation and provisions that help him always strive to overcome difficulties, excel in his studies and life to become a successful son of his homeland, with many contributions and dedication to the cause of education and training in Vietnam.

Prof. Dr. Vo Hanh is a former Senior Lecturer and Head of Biology Department, Vinh University.

In 1967, after graduating from Tran Phu High School (Duc Tho district), he was sent by the State to study at Kishinov University (former Soviet Union).

After receiving a Bachelor's degree in Biology (1973), he returned to Vietnam and was accepted as a researcher at the Institute of Marine Research (now the Institute of Marine Resources and Environment) under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.

At the end of 1976, he moved to teach at the Biology Department of Vinh University until his retirement (2013).

In 1982, he was sent back to his old school (Kishinohop University) as an intern by the Ministry of Universities and Vocational Colleges.

Here, in November 1983, he successfully defended his Associate Doctoral Thesis (now PhD) on the topic: Phytoplankton in Ke Go reservoir (Nghe Tinh) and the effects of some heavy metals on the growth of Kirchneriella irregularis (GMSmith) Korsch.1953.

He was awarded a PhD in Biology, majoring in Botany in 1984, was appointed Associate Professor in 1996 and Professor in 2012.

In 1998, he was elected Head of the Biology Department of Vinh University and held this position until 2006 (before that, he held the positions of Head of the Botany Department and Deputy Head of the Biology Department).

Precious assets of algae

To gain more experience in establishing and implementing scientific projects, from January to April 2001, Vinh University sent him to study at the University of British Columbia (Canada).

In the field of research, it can be said that he was the first person to systematically study the algal flora of the Central region of Vietnam (from 1978-2018).

He has chaired 5 ministerial-level scientific research projects and 1 branch project of the Basic Research Program in Natural Sciences (State level).

The research results have been published in 52 scientific articles in domestic and foreign scientific journals and have been compiled and summarized in 3 published monographs: Vietnamese Freshwater Algae. Classification of Chlorococcales (co-author), 1997. Agriculture Publishing House, Hanoi, 503 pages; Phytoplankton in the water bodies of the North Central region (Editor-in-Chief), 2022. Science and Technology Publishing House, Hanoi, 511 pages and Soil algae in some provinces of Central Vietnam (Editor-in-Chief), 2023. Science and Technology Publishing House, Hanoi, 371 pages.

This is a valuable reference source that he left for future generations to use when they research algae in Vietnam.

During his 40 years of work, he has contributed to training thousands of Bachelors of Biology and Bachelors of Biology, especially directly guiding and successfully defending 35 Masters and 4 PhDs in Botany.

As a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the life and career of Professor Vo Hanh is a shining example for the younger generations to follow. He is a serious teacher at work, gentle and virtuous in daily life, and has deep and broad knowledge, loved and respected by generations of students.

In recognition of his dedication and contributions, the Party and State have awarded him noble titles and awards, typically: Medal for the cause of Science and Technology (2000); Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister (2002); Commemorative Medal for the cause of education (2006).

To his clan and family, he was a responsible son, living a life of duty and love. To his homeland, he contributed to making his village famous.

Up to now, in Van Lam village, he is the first person to be awarded the title of Professor.
