"Both specialized high schools in the city, Le Hong Phong and Tran Dai Nghia, have requested an increase in enrollment quotas for 10th-grade specialized classes in the 2025-2026 school year," a Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training told Tuoi Tre Online on the morning of March 4th.
Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted plans to increase its enrollment quota by 35 students; Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted plans to increase its enrollment quota by 70 students.
"However, this is only the school's projection. The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training will consider the teaching and learning conditions of the two specialized schools, such as classrooms and teaching staff, to decide on the enrollment quota. It is possible that Le Hong Phong and Tran Dai Nghia specialized schools will increase their quotas more than the school's projection," the official from the Department of Education and Training informed.
It is known that the 2025-2026 school year will be the first year that four prestigious high schools in Ho Chi Minh City will stop admitting students to specialized 10th-grade classes: Nguyen Thuong Hien High School, Gia Dinh High School, Mac Dinh Chi High School, and Nguyen Huu Huan High School. Last school year, these four schools admitted 770 students to their specialized 10th-grade classes.
Thus, this year Ho Chi Minh City only has 3 schools admitting students to specialized 10th-grade classes, including 2 schools under the Department of Education and Training, namely Le Hong Phong and Tran Dai Nghia, and one school belonging to the National University of Ho Chi Minh City, the High School for the Gifted.
Why not recruit additional students for the specialized 10th grade classes earlier?
Ho Chi Minh City has been conducting supplementary admissions for 10th grade in public schools (regular classes) since 2023. The Department of Education and Training makes the decision on supplementary admissions immediately after high schools finish the first round of receiving applications for 10th grade. This means that high schools that have not filled their quotas will continue to conduct supplementary admissions.
After two years of implementation, experts have assessed this as a humane decision by the Department of Education and Training. Each year, thanks to this supplementary recruitment, approximately 1,000 students who failed to get into any of their three preferred public high schools have a place to study in a public school.
However, public opinion has also questioned why Ho Chi Minh City only recruits additional students for regular 10th-grade classes and not for specialized 10th-grade classes? Especially since, in reality, many specialized classes at the two specialized high schools, Le Hong Phong and Tran Dai Nghia, have not met their enrollment quotas?
In recent years, the Department of Education and Training has had to organize an additional entrance exam for specialized 10th-grade classes (in previous years, this exam was held after the end of the first semester; this year, it will be held after the end of the 2024-2025 school year). However, this supplementary entrance exam is not highly regarded by experts. Even after organizing this costly exam, many specialized classes at Le Hong Phong and Tran Dai Nghia High Schools still lack the required 35 students.
So why didn't the Department of Education and Training recruit additional students for the specialized 10th grade classes immediately after the two specialized schools finished accepting applications for the first round of 10th grade admissions?
