For nearly four centuries, Tho Xuan Duong - one of the traditional medicine pharmacies in Vietnam, has maintained a 17-generation tradition of treating and saving people using traditional medicine.
Honored by the Vietnam Book of Records Center as “The most traditional oriental medicine pharmacy in Vietnam”, Tho Xuan Duong originates from Tho Am village, Lien Ninh, Thanh Tri, Hanoi.
This land is famous for its tradition of mandarin examinations and the Phung family here has many talented physicians, who were recruited by kings to the Imperial Medical Institute with three royal physicians in the Dynasty.

From the treasure of the Phung family…
According to the Phung family history, the founder of the medical profession was Mr. Phung Van Duong - a famous talented and virtuous physician in the capital and was recruited by the Le Dynasty to practice medicine at Te Sinh Duong - Thai Y Vien in 1653.
Continuing that career, Mr. Duong's son was physician Phung Van Dong. Thanks to his talent and brilliant medical ethics, he was given the title of "Thu Lang Kiem Ngu Y at Thai Y Vien" by the king.
Following in his father's footsteps, physician Phung Van Con continued to serve in military medicine and held the position of Deputy Royal Physician.
In particular, due to his active participation in treating and first aid in the lightning campaign to destroy 200,000 Qing troops in 1789 and his great contributions to the king, Mr. Phung Van Con was awarded the title: "Oanh Liet Tuong Quan" by King Quang Trung.
He was awarded a pair of poison-testing Kim Giao chopsticks and a gold coin "Nhat Pham Duong Trieu" (the highest rank in the order of 9 prestigious ranks in the court).
The chopsticks and the gold coin "Nhat Pham Duong Trieu" have now become the treasures of the Phung family and the medicinal tradition of Tho Xuan Duong.
Absorbing the viewpoints of the Party and State, Uncle Ho's advice, continuing the proud tradition of the family, the later generations of physicians of the Phung family constantly learn and improve their knowledge and medical ethics.
The 14th generation descendant is physician Phung Duc Hau, a physician known for his talent, medical ethics, and love for patients as if they were his own family members. He did not hesitate to travel far and wide to find medicinal herbs, create remedies, and diagnose illnesses for the people. Many people were brought back to life by him.
More than 90 years ago, he established Tho Xuan Duong pharmacy as a place to treat and save people and also a revolutionary base for comrades such as Do Muoi, Bach Thanh Phong, Nguyen Tho Chan, Tran Diep, Tran Do... so he was awarded a certificate of merit by the Government.
… to the generations that preserve the medical profession
Continuing his father's career, physician Phung Duc Do - former Chairman of the Oriental Medicine Association of Thuong Tin district, is also known as the person who brought honor to the Phung family.
At a rare old age, he still diligently examines and treats patients, conducts medical research to serve the cause of taking care of people's health.
He is loved and respected by patients not only for his medical skills but also for being a responsible doctor and compassionate towards patients, and for having made many outstanding contributions to the cause of public health care. For him, treating and saving people is always a passion that has no end.
Determined to continue the family tradition, his son - Dr. Traditional Medicine Practitioner Phung Tuan Giang - the 16th generation descendant, is known as a young, enthusiastic physician, constantly acquiring knowledge from his predecessors to find good remedies, combining traditional medicine with modern medicine such as ultrasound, testing and other advanced paraclinical equipment to increase the ability to cure, reduce the burden of medical costs for patients.
When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, physician Phung Tuan Giang quickly disseminated traditional medicine methods of disease prevention and treatment to the public. About 4,000 doses of Thanh Phe Bai Doc Phu Chinh medicine to increase immunity, inhibit viruses, and prevent flu were distributed to the community for free.
Thousands of patients have been treated by him directly or via the Internet, thereby helping many patients protect their health, save on treatment costs, and reduce medical pressure on the state health system.
More specifically, physician Phung Tuan Giang has continuously studied and successfully applied the unique traditional medicine "Ky Mon Y Phap" to support the treatment of patients.
This is a medicine applied according to a chess board consisting of 64 squares and these 64 squares are also 64 medicines with the functions of restoring the body's mechanism of removing foreign objects, indicating foreign cells, eliminating tumors, reducing inflammation, increasing immunity, preventing metabolic disorders, detoxifying all blood, organs, muscles, cells and reducing pain.
Contribute to the development of traditional medicine
To proactively source medicinal herbs, Tho Xuan Duong has now built three large-scale medicinal herb growing areas in Hanoi, Lao Cai and the Central Highlands.

From common herbs to endemic medicines such as Ngoc Linh Ginseng… all are grown and cared for in a natural way, strictly controlled to obtain the maximum amount of valuable active ingredients and safety for the patient’s health, without harming the ecological environment.
In addition, the Vietnam Institute for Research and Development of Traditional Medicine and the Vietnam Ngoc Linh Ginseng Research and Development Institute have also been established with the task of researching and developing specific precious medicinal plants and concentrated medicinal areas in Vietnam, applying modern preparation solutions to improve the treatment effectiveness of traditional Vietnamese medicinal plant remedies, and applying science and technology to the practical production of specific products from Southeast Asian medicinal plants.
From the practical activities of the institutes, many traditional medicine products have been born and licensed for circulation to serve the cause of public health care.
Inheriting the 400-year tradition of the Phung family, it can be seen that the young generation of this long-standing pharmacy is constantly striving to learn to master traditional medical diagnosis and treatment methods, while promoting the advances of modern medicine combined with traditional medicine.
