On the afternoon of April 1, people discovered a whale carcass about 1.1 meters long and weighing about 15 kg drifting ashore on Nhat Le beach, in Hai Thanh ward, Dong Hoi city, in front of Nhat Le Border Guard Station.
After the discovery, Hai Thanh ward authorities and fishermen held a ceremony and buried the whale's body at the local whale cemetery.
Then on the morning of April 2, people in Bao Ninh commune also discovered another whale carcass drifting ashore in Sa Dong village with a similar length to the whale carcass found at Nhat Le beach, weighing about 20kg.
People also buried the whale's body in the grounds of Sa Hai Tu mausoleum (Bao Ninh commune) to show respect for this sacred fish.
Local people buried the whale according to the beliefs of fishermen in the coastal area. |
The discovery of many whale carcasses of the same size and weight has led many people to believe that the individual whales that washed ashore may be from the same school, active in the waters of Quang Binh.
