According to Mr. Hoang Xuan Giang, engineer of Tien Lang District Agricultural Extension Station (Hai Phong City), breed, soil quality, water quality and technique are decisive factors in raising earthworms.

There are many factors that affect the growth of earthworms, both visible and invisible. Visible factors include mudskippers, catfish, tilapia, and carp, which eat earthworms. Invisible factors include climate change, environmental pollution, and pesticides, which kill earthworms.

Dai Hai water (locally, refers to the type of river water that when the sea water flows in, it becomes salty, when the sea water recedes, it is still fresh water) has a salinity of 3 to 5 parts per thousand, which is very suitable for the reproduction and development of earthworms. Due to the problem of salinity intrusion, the two districts of Tien Lang and Vinh Bao - where the main area of earthworms in Hai Phong city is located, are being greatly affected. Last year, Mr. Giang's pond had a period of salinity up to 28 parts per thousand, the earthworms gradually died, and the output decreased significantly. Before, Tran Duong commune of Vinh Bao district had a lot of earthworms, but now there are almost none left because of salinity intrusion.

“If the saltwater intrusion trend continues like this, in about five years, many fields of earthworms in the coastal areas of Tien Lang and Vinh Bao districts of Hai Phong city will no longer have earthworms. The earthworms will be pushed deeper into the delta. Now, at Lai Vu bridge in Kim Thanh district, Hai Duong province, earthworms have appeared, even though they have never been seen before,” Giang predicted.

Because the earthworms are omnivorous, it is common for pond owners to add organic matter such as manure, corn flour, and bran. This has two effects: first, the earthworms will eat the organic matter directly, and second, the organic matter will improve the soil.

However, many organic substances that pond owners add to the field of worm such as chicken manure, pig manure, corn flour, bran powder contain antibiotic residues, chemicals or genetically modified crops. Therefore, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Huong - owner of two worm conservation areas in Le Xa village, Dai Ban commune, An Duong district, Hai Phong city has resolutely opposed this trend by not releasing anything into the worm pond to ensure food safety according to the criteria of clean and clean.

I asked Mr. Giang about this and was told: "The important thing is that there is currently no price to differentiate between clean and unclean worms. In fact, clean worms are even cheaper, so it does not encourage the expansion of the model. For example, my family grows ST25 rice in the worms field, without using any chemicals, but still sells rice at the same price as the ST25 of households using chemicals. I am also adding chicken manure to the worms pond, but in small quantities, and mainly to grow algae to feed them, helping to reduce costs and increase productivity and quality."

According to Mr. Giang, if the price of safe roe products is higher than unsafe products, many people will follow suit. Therefore, if only there were any agencies or departments that do VietGAP on roe, with QR codes to distinguish clean roe from regular roe, there would be many organic roe products right away. The Chinese market now has high food safety requirements, no less than those of Korea and Japan.

When importing the worms, they tested them and found out that Vietnam still feeds them with substances that are not known to be safe, so they don't like them and import more. That is the main reason why the price of worms in Vietnam has dropped sharply in recent years. If China were to eat Vietnamese worms like before, even if the output were 5-10 times higher than now, it would still run out. Therefore, we have to return to natural farming.

Mr. Giang continued to analyze that the rươi species does not necessarily need to be released but is only for unfavorable areas, with a yield of about 20kg/sao then it is released to compensate, but if it is already 50 - 60kg/sao or more then it is not necessary. Keep expanding the area, increasing the yield until a certain stage, the price of rươi will be saturated, from 250 - 300,000 VND/kg as present down to only about 150,000 VND/kg. However, if you have good techniques, do not raise them "hoping for luck", you will still make a profit as usual.
