Regularly drinking tea and coffee does more than just provide the caffeine you need to feel alert. Research shows that these two beverages can help reduce the risk of many types of cancer.

A recent study by experts at the University of Utah (USA) found that drinking tea or coffee every day will help reduce the risk of head and neck cancer. The study was published in the journal Cancer .

Drinking coffee and tea may help prevent head and neck cancer

Head and neck cancers include cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx, nose, and salivary glands. In fact, head and neck cancer is the seventh most common cancer worldwide. In the study, scientists analyzed data from more than 9,500 people with head and neck cancer and 16,000 healthy people. The data was collected from 14 different studies.

The analysis showed that drinking four cups of coffee a day can reduce the risk of head and neck cancer by 17%. Of which, the risk of oral cancer is reduced by 30% and nasopharyngeal cancer is reduced by 22%. Drinking three to four cups of coffee a day will reduce the risk of hypopharyngeal cancer, which is cancer that appears in the lower part of the throat, by 41%.

Even decaffeinated coffee can reduce the risk of oral cancer by up to 25%. This shows that coffee is not only caffeine but also many other compounds that have cancer-preventing effects.

Tea also has cancer-preventing benefits. Specifically, drinking tea regularly reduces the risk of hypopharyngeal cancer by 29%. However, drinking more than 1 cup of tea per day increases the risk of nasopharyngeal cancer by 38%. Scientists believe that drinking a lot of tea causes reflux. Acid from the stomach will go up the esophagus and damage healthy tissue in the nasopharynx. Over time, this continuous damage can easily lead to cell mutation and cancer formation.

Scientists believe that coffee and tea contain nutrients that can inhibit the formation of cancer. Not only that, diet and exercise are also very important to help prevent cancer. Moderate exercise or more for at least 150 minutes/week is scientifically proven to reduce inflammation, improve immunity and reduce the risk of cancer, according to Medical News Today .
