Writer Nguyen Quang Sang's work is in the Literary Essay question, worth 6 points in the general Literature exam for 10th graders at Hanoi Pedagogical University, on the morning of June 1.
Leaving the exam room at 11:15 a.m., Huu Thang, from Giang Vo Secondary School, Hanoi, said that the first round of the Literature exam had 2 questions, with the same structure as every year. The Social Essay question worth 4 points required students to present their views on the saying "Smile at life, life will smile at you". The Literature Essay question worth 6 points asked about the work "Ivory Comb" by author Nguyen Quang Sang, requiring analysis of the character Thu.
Although he prefers poetry to prose, Thang was still able to do the assignment because this was also a work he had reviewed quite thoroughly.
"I guess I got about 7 points in Literature and I'm satisfied with my test today," said the male student. Taking the English major exam, Thang said that in addition to the Hanoi National University of Education major, he will also take the exam for Nguyen Hue High School for the Gifted, which will take place on June 10-12.
Dao Quynh Chi, a student at Co Nhue 2 Secondary School in Hanoi, said the exam was basic and she had practiced a lot of the types of questions at school, so she did not encounter many difficulties. In addition, the female student also "hit the jackpot" with the Literature Essay question.
"At school, the teachers shared that the family topic is likely to be included in the 10th grade exam this year, so they asked me to review the work Ivory Comb many times. The questions were not too demanding, so I was able to do it," Chi said. However, the female student felt a bit regretful because the writing was long and the time was limited, so the conclusion was not as expected.
Although she has the advantage of taking the Literature exam, Chi believes that students taking other majors can also do well.
Nguyen Huu Kien, a student at Lomonosov Secondary and High School in Hanoi, also said that the Literature exam was familiar. With two extra Literature classes a week, Kien was able to complete the test and was expected to get around 7 points.
I am interested in the Social Essay when it comes to sayings that express optimism. To prove the saying is correct, the male student gives an example of Stephen Hawking, a British theoretical physicist, cosmologist and author. Despite being paralyzed and losing the ability to speak, he still achieved achievements in his field and was admired by many people.
With the literature essay question, according to Kien, basic analysis is required. Students will not have much difficulty doing this part. The male student registered for the 10th grade English major, the subject with the highest competition rate at the Pedagogical Specialized School this year.

This year, Hanoi National University of Education High School for the Gifted has about 6,100 candidates taking the exam to win 315 places in 7 specialized classes.
Candidates taking the entrance exam must take three tests including Math, Literature for all candidates and specialized subjects corresponding to each specialized class (IT majors take Math). Candidates will only be considered for admission if they take all three tests, do not violate regulations and do not score 2 points or lower in any subject.
The admission score is the sum of the three subject scores, in which the specialized subject is multiplied by a factor of two. The University of Education High School for the Gifted does not add priority points. The results will be announced before July 31.
Last year, the highest benchmark score for the 10th grade of Pedagogy major was 27.5 for Math. The four classes of Biology, Chemistry, Literature and English had similar benchmark scores, ranging from 25 to 25.25 points. The IT and Physics classes had benchmark scores of 23.25 and 23.75, respectively.
