This year's weather has been complicated, with little rain and prolonged drought affecting the flowering and fruiting of plum trees. The city has directed the city's Agricultural Service Center to organize training courses and provide technical guidance on plum tree care in each stage. At the same time, it has sent staff to the grassroots to directly guide people in applying appropriate farming methods, applying scientific and technical advances in inter-season and off-season planting, pruning techniques, fruit pruning, etc. to improve the quality of plums.
In Chieng Co commune, the whole commune has more than 780 hectares of plum intercropped with coffee, of which nearly 450 hectares are post-plum, over 284 hectares are three-flower plum, with an average yield of over 6,600 tons/year. Visiting plum gardens, plum growers said: In the face of climate change, from the beginning of the year until now, rainfall has been insignificant, drought has occurred, to combat drought for plum trees, people have built water storage tanks, invested in automatic sprinkler irrigation systems, ensuring water for plum trees; pruning small branches, branches with pests and diseases to keep the trees airy, limiting the shelter of pests and diseases.
In Chieng Den commune, in 14/14 villages, there are more than 500 hectares of plum trees intercropped with coffee trees, which are also in the fruiting period. Previously, households let plum trees grow naturally, not knowing how to apply science and technology, so productivity and output were low. After being propagated and trained, farmers now apply science and technology to care for trees to recover quickly, improve productivity and fruit quality... especially knowing how to apply techniques to help plums bear fruit early and prolong the harvest time, increasing product value.
Looking at the plum gardens wearing a fresh green coat with clusters of fruit that are carefully and meticulously cared for, it is expected that with the guidance and support of local authorities and farmers mastering technical advances, the entire plum area in the city will grow and develop well, promising to bring a bumper crop and increase farmers' income.
