In addition to his love for lion dance, which is a family tradition, Cu Hoang Long, a student at Tran Van Giau High School, Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City, is also passionate about fashion design.
As the third generation of Trung Xuan Duong lion dance troupe (Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City), when he was only 5 years old, Cu Hoang Long - the owner of impressive fashion designs, was taught lion dance and drumming by his father. Long said that this is a subject that requires agility, flexibility and dexterity. Because he is a "family member", Long learned very quickly in lion dance and drumming.

Long said that his family's lion dance troupe was founded by his great-grandfather and grandfather in 1993. During this time, in addition to practicing and performing lion dances, Long's family also made drums and sold oriental medicine. Later, the work of making drums was too hard, so Long's family only maintained the lion dance troupe and sold medicine to make a living until now. Every day, in addition to going to school, Long also participates in lion dance practice to improve his health. During the period of social distancing due to the Covid-19 epidemic, Long researched and started making fashion design drawings. When the national cultural costume design contest at Miss Grand Vietnam 2023 (Miss Grand Vietnam) started, Long participated with a work called "Festival Lion Drum". The costume was inspired by the lion dance culture during Vietnamese festivals. Long spent more than 2 months to complete this costume.

“In order to avoid confusing the image of the unicorn with other cultures, I have researched carefully to incorporate purely Vietnamese elements into the costume design. The outstanding feature of the Vietnamese unicorn is that it has a flat beak, instead of a curved one, and uses artificial feathers,” Long said. Not stopping there, Long continued to challenge himself with the national cultural costume design contest at Miss Universe Vietnam 2023 with the work “Capital of the Dragon God”. Through this costume, Long hopes to introduce and honor the unique cultural features of the nation. In addition, the costume also carries the meaning of luck, peace and the aspiration for the country to develop.

“The two times I participated in the competition, I encountered many difficulties in realizing the design drawings because I had not studied anything about fashion. During the competition, I was fortunate to receive help from seniors to complete the work,” Long said. Designer Vu Viet Ha, Long's instructor in the national cultural costume design competition at Miss Grand Vietnam 2023, commented: “Long is a young contestant but his presentation was very good, professional and convincing to the audience. Long has a rich understanding of culture, making me feel confident and clearly seeing the potential of this contestant in fashion design." Designer Vu Viet Ha added: "Throughout the working process, Long was always progressive, proactively asking questions to contribute to creating a work that is most purely Vietnamese. Although he has not studied fashion, he has created an elaborate costume, using thin and light materials, creating a feeling of comfort, easy to perform and similar to the sketch."
