The guesthouse owner in Dongguan, Guangdong Province in southeastern China, a woman surnamed Yuan, said she was moved when she learned that the man had traveled from another province to find her to pay, the South China Morning Post reported on February 10.

Surveillance camera footage shows the man walking towards the front desk at the motel at around 8pm. He took money out of his pocket, counted it and gave it to Ms Yuan.

“How much do I owe you?” he asked. Ms. Yuan looked confused and was about to ask who he was when the man realized she did not recognize him. “Do you remember me? I owe you money for the room. I will pay you back,” he said in the video.

As he explained, Ms. Yuan began to recall that day. "I didn't think he would come back so I forgot about him," local media quoted Ms. Yuan as saying.

The man told the innkeeper that a year ago, he had come to Dongguan to look for work and stayed at Ms. Yuan's establishment. However, he could not find a job and after a few days, he had spent all the money he had brought with him, so he had to run away.

"I help a lot of people. Some people can't pay. I just thought he was one of those people who wouldn't come back," Ms. Yuan said.

The man told Ms. Yuan that he had had health problems - otherwise he would have come earlier - and apologized for coming back so late.

Mrs. Yuan noticed that the money he gave her was only loose change and believed that he had worked hard to save it, but no matter how much she refused to accept it, he insisted on paying.

She finally accepted 50 yuan (about 170,000 VND) from him and he looked relieved as he turned and walked out. "His integrity is really a gem," the guesthouse owner said.

The touching story has attracted attention on Chinese social media. "Integrity is gold," one person wrote. "What a responsible man," another commented.

Stories of honesty often melt the hearts of netizens in the billion-people country.

Last month, a man in central China traveled between two provinces to repay 200 yuan (nearly 700,000 VND) he borrowed from a policeman to get home when he was completely penniless.

In August 2023, two brothers in central China were widely praised online after they returned 30 new iPhone 14 Pros worth 210,000 yuan (about 720 million VND) that they found in a trash bin in their residential area.
