Car crashes into group of pedestrians in China, 35 people killed

CCTV reported that 35 people were killed after a car crashed into a group of people at a sports center in Zhuhai city, Guangdong province, China on the evening of November 11.

The above car crash also injured 43 people, according to Reuters citing information today, November 12, from China's CCTV.

Earlier, local police said on the evening of November 11 that a car had hit a group of pedestrians at a sports center in Xiangzhou District, Zhuhai City, and then drove away, according to AFP.

"After being alerted, police quickly dispatched members to the scene and assisted in taking the injured to hospital for treatment," police added.

Police on the evening of November 12 added that the driver who caused the accident was a driver named Pham (62 years old), who drove an SUV through the gate of the sports center, hitting people exercising on the center's internal road.

Police then found Mr Pham in the act of self-harming with a knife and “immediately stopped him and took him to the hospital for treatment.” Police added that Mr Pham was in a coma after self-harming with his neck and other parts of his body and was “unable to be questioned.”

ChinesePresident Xi Jinping has called for “all-out efforts” to treat the injured and “demanded that the perpetrators be punished according to the law,” according to Xinhua. Xi has also ordered local authorities to “strictly prevent extreme cases.”

In September, six people were killed after a car lost control and crashed into bicycles and other vehicles on a bridge in central China's Hunan province.

Also that month, a school bus plowed into a crowd outside a middle school in eastern China, killing 11 parents and students.
