The opening ceremony of the 136th Canton Fair was attended by more than 70 consulates, trade representative offices, and press agencies in Guangzhou, China.
The event was also attended by Vice Governor of Guangdong Provincial People's Government Zhang Xin, leaders of the Ministry of Commerce, General Administration of Customs, China International Trade Promotion Commission, Guangzhou City People's Government, many trade associations, retail associations, and businesses around the world, including the British, American, Brazilian, European Union (EU) Chambers of Commerce in China, and globally famous buyers such as Lulu Group (UAE), Coppel (Mexico), GoGlobal (UK), Joinco (Portugal), Al Rafael (Saudi Arabia), etc.
The Canton Fair began to be held in 1957. It is an important platform for China's opening up and international trade cooperation, vividly demonstrating the effectiveness of China's economic opening up to foreign trade, with the longest duration and largest scale in the country.
In early 2024, during an inspection trip to Guangdong, Chinese Premier Li Qiang emphasized that the future direction of the China (Guangdong) Import and Export Fair should continue to maintain its leading position; give full play to its role as a comprehensive platform for opening up, gather new quality production forces, and introduce new consumption trends, industrial trends, and advanced technologies.
The 136th Canton Fair was held from October 15 to November 4, divided into three sessions, and the online format continued to be maintained as usual. The total exhibition area was 1.55 million square meters, with a total of 74,000 booths, divided into 55 exhibition areas and 171 specialized areas.
There were 30,000 enterprises participating in the offline exhibition, including about 29,400 Chinese export enterprises, an increase of nearly 800 enterprises compared to the previous period. The number of newly participating enterprises reached nearly 4,600. More than 8,000 high-tech enterprises, famous brands and manufacturers participated in the event, an increase of 40% compared to the previous period.
The fair displayed 1.15 million new products; 1.04 million clean green products; 1.11 million products with intellectual property rights, all of which increased significantly compared to the previous fair. This fair also had a larger scale of participation online, with about 48,000 businesses, an increase of 60% compared to the previous fair, and about 3.75 million products on display, an increase of 50% compared to the previous fair.
Guangdong Vice Governor Zhang Xin said that Guangdong has been the province with the leading economic strength among localities in China for the past 35 years, and is the place where the country's leading economic and open-door policies are implemented.
The city's gross domestic product (GDP) in 2023 will reach more than 13 trillion yuan (US$1.9 trillion), with an actual population of about 150 million. Guangdong Province is currently implementing the decisions of the Third Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the requirements of the "1+3+10" development plan. It focuses on implementing policies related to foreign trade, foreign investment in China, Chinese investment abroad, and foreign talents to promote opening up and build a more open economy.

The province's total consumption reached more than 4.7 trillion yuan (US$671 billion), and the large volume of economic activity and large number of consumers created a large demand for goods and services. At the same time, Guangdong Province has strong competitiveness in innovation, leading China in innovation strength for seven consecutive years.
It is also home to one-seventh of the country’s R&D workforce. The province has a modern industrial system with more than 70,000 high-tech enterprises, about 450 international sea routes and 97 air routes.
This Canton Fair is meaningful, it is the place that best represents the image of Guangdong - the land of investment and innovation, and has been bringing many business opportunities by connecting the largest number of domestic and foreign buyers, with the widest national scope, the most comprehensive range of goods and the best trading efficiency in China.
