This is a new step in investing in upgrading specialized equipment in the port's development strategy to improve loading and unloading capacity, increase the efficiency of the logistics service chain, and meet the ever-increasing demand for cargo transit through the seaport area in the Central region.

New modern crane system, high capacity
On May 16, at Chu Lai port, the “Handover Ceremony of STS Gantry Crane System and RTG Frame Crane” took place. The system includes 2 STS (Ship To Shore) cranes located at berth area 2, along with 3 RTG (Rubber Tired Gantry Crane) cranes at the rear container yard.
STS gantry cranes are manufactured by DOOSAN VINA in cooperation with THACO INDUSTRIES, providing a complete package from design, manufacturing, assembly to technical transfer and operation.
STS cranes are capable of handling 40-ton containers with a reach of 40m, suitable for 50,000 DWT container ships.
Together with Liebherr cranes, the STS crane system helps speed up cargo handling progress (nearly 50%), shortens the time the ship is anchored at the port; loading and unloading productivity reaches 100 containers/hour, an increase of 60 containers/hour compared to before.

The RTG crane manufactured by THACO INDUSTRIES is equivalent in width to 6 rows of 40-foot containers and a lane for trucks, with a lifting capacity of 40 tons. The crane uses the DGPS system (differential global positioning system) to automatically steer and locate containers on the yard. The entire specialized crane system, along with the surveillance camera system and synchronous data connection on the computer, is gradually being completed and put into operation.

Mr. Kim Hyo Tae - General Director of DOOSAN VINA said: “This is the first project we cooperated with THILOGI and Chu Lai Port. With the support of THILOGI, especially in transporting equipment by sea, the project was completed and handed over on schedule. After completing the FAC stage (final acceptance certificate), all operating techniques were completely transferred by DOOSAN VINA to Chu Lai Port. The 100% “made in Vietnam” STS crane is suitable for the wharf structure at the port, helping to improve loading and unloading productivity, meeting the demand for goods trading in the region” .
On the same day, the SITC HENGDE ship (SITC shipping line) docked at Chu Lai port and "opened the cargo" using the specialized STS crane, loading and unloading nearly 600 containers of goods, mainly raw materials and industrial products such as spare parts, medical equipment, garments, furniture, agricultural products...
In less than 6 hours of processing, all containers were loaded onto the ship, speeding up the import and export of goods for businesses in industrial parks such as Bac Chu Lai, Tam Thang (Quang Nam), VSIP (Quang Ngai)...

Previously, during the trial operation period, the port selected a team of suitable technical staff and crane operators with full experience, capacity, and specialized training, ensuring the equipment operated stably, safely, and effectively.
Promote investment in equipment, improve service quality
THILOGI has identified synchronous investment in infrastructure and equipment as one of the key solutions to improve the quality of the logistics service chain. Currently, Chu Lai port is accelerating the completion of the 50,000-ton wharf and putting it into operation from the beginning of June 2024. Along with the large-capacity crane system, the company has also invested in a large number of specialized semi-trailers for transportation in the port area.

This year, the port continues to invest in a fleet of tractors and 4,000HP tugboats to serve the transportation and towing of 50,000-ton ships safely and continuously 24/7. Deploy and apply ePort electronic port software, electronic customs clearance, electronic payment, and apply PL - TOS software in bulk cargo exploitation. Thereby helping customers to conveniently transact, update the status of actual ship and cargo data, save time and costs; at the same time increase productivity and service efficiency, towards the goal of forming a seaport technology ecosystem.
According to Mr. Phan Van Ky - General Director of Chu Lai Port, the port will gradually improve the quality of operations; speed up the progress of cargo handling; review and cut down wasteful steps to reduce loading and unloading costs. At the same time, strengthen cooperation with state management agencies such as Customs, Border Guard, Maritime Port Authority... to reform procedures and exploitation processes; standardize services according to international standards, contributing to brand positioning, attracting many shipping lines and large domestic and international customers.

To achieve the goal of turning Chu Lai port into an international logistics center, with costs equal to those of the North and South, the port is focusing on investing in in-depth development, completing key projects, in line with the business situation and import-export activities.
In particular, the port focuses on improving the capacity of wharf exploitation, infrastructure, and equipment, contributing to perfecting the logistics supply chain, creating momentum for the development of production areas and effectively exploiting the potential and advantages of the region.
