According to Mr. Phan Van Ky - Director of Chu Lai International Port, Chu Lai International Port is a type 1 seaport according to the Master Plan for the development of Vietnam's seaport system for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, approved by the Prime Minister. The People's Committee of Quang Nam province has issued a Decision approving the investment policy for the project to expand and upgrade Chu Lai port, part of Tam Hiep port area, invested by Chu Lai International Seaport Company, with a total investment capital of VND 1,590 billion.
After a period of construction and completion, on September 19, 2024, the Vietnam Maritime Administration issued a decision on the announcement of the opening of wharf No. 2, Chu Lai port under Chu Lai International Seaport Company to receive domestic and international ships entering and exiting to load and unload goods and perform other related maritime services. The completed wharf No. 2 (50,000-ton wharf) includes the wharf section extending 365m downstream to wharf No. 1, increasing the total length of Chu Lai port to 836m. The 20m wide internal traffic route runs along the back of the wharf connecting the wharf with the logistic area and the duty-free zone. General container yards and refrigerated container yards are built and arranged behind the wharf.
With the structure of the wharf connecting to the shore using steel pipe sheet pile technology, which is applied for the first time in Vietnam in the construction of wharfs, ensuring the sustainability and safety of seaport activities. The current depth in front of the wharf in phase 1 is minus 11.6m, Chu Lai Port will continue to dredge phase 2 to minus 14.7m to ensure the reception of general cargo ships and container ships with a capacity of up to 50,000 tons.
Investment in synchronous infrastructure and equipment are two core factors that Chu Lai Port focuses on, aiming to improve its operating capacity and service quality. The 50,000-ton port has invested in and installed a specialized, modern and high-capacity crane system for loading and unloading containers, such as 02 STS gantry cranes with an investment cost of more than 300 billion VND, and 03 RTG frame cranes for the port yard with a cost of 100 billion VND, along with a number of specialized vehicles for internal port transportation.
According to Mr. Ky, the completion of the 50,000-ton wharf project has contributed to promoting the goal of Chu Lai port becoming an international logistics center, creating momentum for production development and effectively exploiting the potential and advantages of the region. Up to now, Chu Lai port has served the needs of delivery - transportation, import - export for large enterprises in industrial parks such as Tam Thang Industrial Park, Thuan Yen Industrial Park, VSIP Quang Ngai Industrial Park, and the Central Highlands provinces; connecting goods from Southern Laos and Northern Cambodia to Chu Lai port. "The 50,000-ton wharf project is not only a step forward in infrastructure development but also plays an important role in enhancing the capacity of the logistics chain. This helps reduce logistics service costs in the area. The unit is committed to continuing to invest and develop Chu Lai port, meeting the increasing demand for transportation, import and export of goods of local and regional enterprises, while contributing to the sustainable development of Quang Nam province" - Mr. Ky said.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Tran Nam Hung - Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee emphasized that the 50,000-ton port project not only contributes to improving the province's maritime transport capacity but also creates more job opportunities and promotes sustainable development of the region. This project also plays an important role in the planning of the development of Vietnam's seaport system. This project also contributes significantly to the economic growth target of Quang Nam province in 2025. The expansion of Chu Lai port not only helps to improve the capacity of cargo transportation, reduce logistics costs for businesses but also attracts many new investment projects, creating momentum to promote supporting industries, import and export and sea tourism. This is an important step forward, making Quang Nam become the leading logistics center in the Central region.
