Be careful with 'scientific bias', '100% accuracy' on TikTok

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên19/06/2023

Entering the final stage of reviewing for the 2023 high school graduation exam, many candidates are turning to social media channels like TikTok to gain more knowledge and learn effective test-taking methods. However, in addition to the stream of useful information, there are many videos instructing learners to "take shortcuts" by circling with "winged" introductions such as helping to achieve high scores, methods based on... "psychology"!

Don't know how to do the test and still get points?

Just type in the search bar keywords about multiple choice questions, TikTok immediately suggests related videos for each high school exam subject, mainly math and English. For example, in the video with 3.9 million views, the HIH account introduces 3 steps to correctly circle multiple choice questions in math "with a basis" that is said to have helped this person get 28 points in block D1 in the high school graduation exam.

Multiple choice test tips based on keywords, psychology, differences between answers... with "100% correct" advertising from many TikTokers

"First, of the 4 answers, the most unusual answer is usually the wrong answer. According to psychology, the person who sets the test often wants to hide the correct answer, so they often intentionally try to find ways to switch around the correct answer. Usually you will see 3 similar results, 1 of the 3 is the correct answer...", this account instructed.

"Scientifically based" is also the argument used by TikToker NT in a video titled "Scientifically based" that attracted 1.3 million views. Specifically, this person believes that this is a method taught by teachers for all subjects, not self-guessing, and advises candidates to count the number of times they choose answers A, B, C, D after finishing the test, and the answer that is chosen the least often is the answer.

Or in another video with 3.8 million views, the HC account shows tips for circling English "when you don't know how to do it". In it, this person gives specific methods for specific types of exercises, such as in the reading comprehension section, checking to see which answer is closest to the personal pronoun will be the correct answer, or in the pronunciation of the suffixes s and es, words ending in f, t, k are in the same group, words that are different will be the correct answer.

Videos showing tricks for slicing attract hundreds of thousands to millions of views.

Preparing for the high school graduation exam, Lam Vinh Hong, a 12th grader at Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School (HCMC), commented that these "shortcut" instruction videos are highly entertaining, helping him relax after stressful hours of studying. However, the male student also acknowledged that the shortcuts instructed on TikTok have many potential risks.

"Acting in the name of teachers or attracting high views can make many candidates believe that the cheating method is correct, thereby applying it in practice on the exam, affecting their scores. You need to be aware that instead of wasting time following each step that TikToker instructs, spending time reviewing the lesson and filling in the answers on the answer sheet will be more effective. After all, cheating is just a gamble," Hong shared.

Be careful and alert

Commenting on the tricks to guess answers that are appearing everywhere on TikTok, a male teacher currently working in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City advised candidates to be careful because the methods mentioned are often only suitable for questions with difficulty at the recognition level, or even incorrect knowledge. "When the time comes, students should not 'memorize' the tricks to guess answers, but should consolidate basic knowledge with mind maps or seek help from friends and subject teachers to avoid failing," he said.

According to experts, candidates need to be careful and alert when watching videos showing how to circle questions because they have no scientific basis and even incorrect knowledge.

Master Bui Van Cong, an online exam preparation teacher, affirmed that the tips for circling multiple choice questions have no scientific basis, cannot be trusted, and candidates need to be alert when receiving similar information online. "In general, these videos do not affect candidates much because they all have their own opinions and goals for each exam, and it is also very difficult to get a failing score. When determined to enter university, candidates have also prepared well in terms of academic ability," said Mr. Cong.

4 things candidates need to pay special attention to

There are only 9 days left until the 2023 high school graduation exam. At this time, there are 4 things candidates need to pay special attention to, said Master Cong.

Firstly, candidates need to pay attention to the weather and have a regular schedule to keep their health in the best condition.

After that, you should clearly define the desired score target for each test to create motivation, instead of vaguely thinking "I want to get a high score" without knowing specifically how high.

Relieve exam pressure in many ways, such as imagining the positive aspects of upcoming university life, to transform the pressure of 'having to pass' into the joy of "what will be enjoyed".

At the same time, candidates can systematize what they need to do in the last days to avoid confusing themselves, and remember to only look at the answers after completing the exams to avoid creating pressure for the next exam.
