Hoa Gia Linh, a 9A2 student at Giang Vo Secondary School, Ba Dinh District (Hanoi), said that in addition to studying hard in the final stage to achieve good results in the upcoming 10th grade high school entrance exam, placing NVs also requires careful calculation to ensure that they match her abilities. In addition to taking the entrance exam to specialized schools, this year, Gia Linh plans to place NV1 at Phan Dinh Phung High School (Tay Ho District) and continue to think, calculate and consult teachers and parents to place NV2.
With the new program, Linh feels most worried about the Literature subject because the questions will not use materials in the textbook, requiring students to have thinking and literary ability to get high scores. If in the past, students only needed to memorize, study carefully, and memorize the knowledge taught by teachers in class to get high scores, now students must be quick, write correctly, be creative, and relate to real life.
However, what makes me somewhat relieved is that this year's exam, Hanoi did not double the score coefficients for Literature and Math, so the importance of the three subjects is the same.

Many parents share the same nervous and tense feeling when choosing a school to place their children in. |
Ms. Nguyen Thuy Hanh, whose child is in grade 9 and is going to grade 10 this year in Hanoi, shared that her child has average academic ability, so the family is having a headache because they don't know how to place NV appropriately. "Top schools are out of reach, middle-ranking schools often have a large number of applications and a high competition rate. Not to mention, there are cases where the admission score is low this year but skyrockets next year, which is very unpredictable," Ms. Hanh said.
Many parents share the same nervousness and tension when choosing a school to place their children in. There are many different opinions, some think that placing a high score above their children's ability will give them a goal to strive for, but others are determined to choose a low score to be safe.
Do not force your child to choose a school beyond his/her ability.
Having spent many years as a homeroom teacher and advising students on NV registration, a teacher at Dong Da Secondary School, Dong Da District (Hanoi) said that before each exam, teachers often advise students and their families on choosing a high school that suits their abilities. Each student has 3 NV candidates, and there is a difference in scores between the NV candidates, so when choosing NV1, NV2, NV3, careful calculations must be made to avoid choosing the wrong one and failing all the NV candidates, which is very regrettable.
According to this teacher, in reality, there are still cases where parents choose schools according to their wishes, beyond their children's abilities. Students and parents need to refer to the benchmark scores of the high school they plan to register for and divide the average scores of the subjects to calculate according to their abilities through surveys and assessments of the school's quality. In addition, this year's 10th grade entrance exam does not double the scores for Math and Literature, students need to invest in learning all 3 subjects equally.
There are also opinions that Hanoi needs to study the method of placing NV that is beneficial and ensures the safety of students. For example, students can adjust NV after registering or students with exam results can register NV at schools with suitable scores.
This is also the regulation that the Department of Education and Training of Quang Tri province applies in the 10th grade entrance exam.
Ms. Le Thi Huong, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Quang Tri province, said that to enroll students in grade 10, the Department of Education and Training organizes an exam consisting of 3 subjects: Math, Literature and English. After receiving the score, each student can only register 1 wish to attend 1 public high school. This is to help students have the opportunity to choose a school that suits their abilities and at the same time limit the situation where a school has to receive many wishes of students registering at the same time.
However, Hanoi is a locality with the number of candidates registering for the exam reaching over 100 thousand students every year. Meanwhile, Hanoi only has 117 public high schools, the rate of students admitted to grade 10 is only 60-62%.
Mr. Nguyen Quang Tuan, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, said that the current arrangement of placing 3 candidates for admission to grade 10 of public high schools is appropriate and convenient for students. The above registration has contributed to maintaining the stability of the city's enrollment work over the past years. In the coming time, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training will consider if there is a more suitable plan.
