TPO - Due to severe damage and tearing of the asphalt surface, a series of expansion joints on Ring Road 3 are being "closed" by the Department of Construction for repair and replacement.

After 13 years of use and with traffic density increasing 8 times compared to the design capacity of the route, many items of the elevated Ring Road 3, including expansion joints at many locations, are now severely damaged. Photo taken on the afternoon of March 25.

The damaged expansion joint here is showing cracks and tears in the asphalt surface.

This is not only against the construction design but also dangerous for vehicles on the road, because when detecting and passing through damaged expansion joints, the road surface will rise, and the driver will reflexively brake suddenly, increasing the risk of collision and accidents that cause the cars to be pushed back for the vehicle behind.

With sections having many damaged expansion joints such as Mai Dich overpass - Thang Long Avenue intersection, cars and trucks are having to queue up at slow speed, causing constant congestion. Photo taken on March 24.

Based on the above reality, the leader of the Traffic Works Maintenance Board, Department of Construction said that the Board is currently implementing a "major" repair project, including "closing" the elevated Ring Road 3 at night and closing half of the roadway during the day to repair and replace damaged expansion joints.

The time the authorities closed the elevated Ring Road 3 section from Mai Dich to Thang Long Avenue intersection to repair expansion joints was from March 23 to April 27.

After repair, the damaged rubber expansion joints will be replaced with iron expansion joints with a "sawtooth" structure, helping the vehicle to travel smoothly.

Last night and this morning, when the elevated Ring Road 3 section from Mai Dich to Thang Long Avenue intersection was closed at night and partially closed during the day, traffic was difficult. However, the authorities said that the joint Traffic Inspectorate and Traffic Police have a plan to divert traffic, and that closing the road is a "soft" solution. If congestion persists, the authorities will ask the unit to narrow the fence to ensure traffic first.
