Fresh air comes from good ideas…
+ In many working sessions, I have heard you share that in the Southern region, there seems to be a new wind, new energy coming from local leaders of the Association, contributing to the overall effectiveness of the activities of our Vietnam Journalists Association in recent times. Could you please share more about this, Vice President?
- Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association Tran Trong Dung: I have not been to every locality yet, and I have only been in office for a year, but I see that most of the local Association leaders have and are having new energy, are more active, more caring, and are devoting more of their minds to Association activities than before.
In particular, with the spirit of “what leader, what movement” , the leaders of the Association at all levels have made efforts to express themselves through proposing and putting forward many initiatives, even many good ways of doing things. From there, creating a true playground in terms of journalism, journalistic ethics, behind-the-scenes activities, charity, social security, etc.
For example, some Associations are very proactive. Right after the Politburo issued Resolution 09 on economic development of Khanh Hoa province to 2030 and vision to 2045, the Khanh Hoa Provincial Journalists Association immediately organized a large workshop with the theme "Press and media with sustainable marine economic development in the spirit of Resolution 09 of the Politburo" (September 2022), the Ba Ria - Vung Tau Journalists Association organized training courses in conjunction with neighboring provinces, organized field trips to seaports, Oil and Gas units for both provincial reporters and resident reporters, creating a close and friendly relationship between colleagues and between journalists and departments, branches and units in the area.
Or the Lam Dong Provincial Journalists Association organized the Tay Nguyen Cluster Sports Festival; the Ca Mau Journalists Association organized a delegation to visit and study and exchange experiences in Kon Tum and Tay Ninh. The Ho Chi Minh City Journalists Association launched a campaign for students of journalism courses to participate in contributing to support and help build a charity house for a disadvantaged member of the Ca Mau Journalists Association... These are good, creative and also very affectionate ways of doing things between the Associations at all levels, creating a new atmosphere in the Association's activities.

+ The new atmosphere in the Association's activities is very important to maintain and ignite the fire for members to be more active. Sir, how have the changes coming from the local Journalists Associations kept pace with the spirit of innovation, creativity, determination and efficiency that the Central Association has been implementing in recent times, sir?
- Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association Tran Trong Dung: I think that after the 11th Congress of the Vietnam Journalists Association with the theme "Continuing to innovate, enhance the role and effectiveness of the Vietnam Journalists Association's activities, building a team of journalists and a journalism that is combative, humane, professional and modern" , the guidelines and policies of the Central Association have been moving towards being closer to the grassroots, closer to the rights and interests of its members.
And vice versa, the Association levels have also caught up very quickly in practical activities. For example, when organizing professional training courses related to the needs of the base, the units proposed wishes and wanted to add additional content and the Professional Training Center closely followed those topics, meaning that we have strived to meet the needs of the members.
Or when the Association advocated organizing regional Press Awards, we not only organized the Mekong Delta Press Award this year, the 7th time, but also organized the first Southeast Press Award and are continuing to mobilize accompanying units to have more press awards for the Central Highlands and the Central region, creating more playgrounds for members and journalists.
In particular, the local Associations in the Southern region are very excited that the Central Association is closer to the grassroots. The Association's leaders have organized many working delegations to work with 6 provinces in all 3 regions and will continue to do so in the coming time. In fact, from the working sessions, the localities are very respectful, they recognize and have given positive instructions and support to the Journalists Associations after those working sessions.
In addition, the Association has provided a lot of support in communication work for major issues that the press agencies in the Southern region have also responded to. For example, we have organized Press Clubs to promote articles about localities.
Specifically, the issue of inter-regional tourism in the Southeast region is being implemented by the Tourism Reporters Club (Ho Chi Minh City Journalists Association) to support communication for Dong Nai, Vung Tau, and the Central Highlands... Or our Economic - Agricultural Reporters Club is also discussing with the Ho Chi Minh City Journalists Association and Ben Tre to prepare for a trip to send reporters to Ben Tre to promote new models and effective methods of farmers in building new rural areas...

Based on the practical needs of members
+ A year into the assignment but the work seems to be continuous. Sir, what is the important thing that creates the excitement and enthusiasm in the activities we have organized in the past time?
- Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association Tran Trong Dung: The important thing is that when carrying out any activity, we always start from the practical needs of the members. To put it simply, we have to put ourselves in the shoes of a member to see if the activities the Association wants to organize are interesting to the members and whether they want to participate.
With the Association, we should not think of stories that are too far-fetched but must have specific tasks, feasible and close activities, gathering and creating a moderate playground. With normal activities, a newspaper only works for one newspaper, an Association only works for one locality, but the role of the Central Association will be to create a common playground, connecting Association levels, regional clusters, linking this cluster with another cluster, press agencies with each other...
Of course, when implementing a program, there will be a lot of pressure, the pressure to succeed is a very understandable story. To be sure, we will usually have thorough discussions with many units from many perspectives to be able to turn the idea into reality. Any unit or leader of the Association that feels it is feasible will implement it together, but if not sure, there will be other options.
For example, we have just assigned the Tay Ninh Journalists Association to host the first Press Award on the Southeast region and after discussion, the Association is very excited, discussing and implementing it together. Or the Binh Duong Journalists Association has just been assigned the task of hosting a large-scale regional seminar on improving the quality of local resident reporters in early June...
Obviously, doing Association work is sometimes difficult but also easy. Regardless of the event, discussing and brainstorming inside or outside of official meetings, listening to presentations, or just chatting on the sidelines, every day can help us come up with many interesting ideas.

+ Sir, in response to many important events, what are the plans for the coming time and activities of local Associations in the Southern region to continue this dynamic spirit?
- Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association Tran Trong Dung: There will definitely be many activities and we are actively preparing. In the immediate future, in early June 2023, we plan to coordinate with the Vietnam Association of Information Technology to organize a seminar on artificial intelligence (AI) with the press in Hau Giang province.
In July 2023, we plan to coordinate with the People's Committee of Ben Tre province to organize a Forum on promoting the role of the media in responding flexibly to climate change and establish a Green Development Journalism Club (under the Vietnam Journalists Association Cultural House), initially in Ho Chi Minh City and the Southeast region.
On the occasion of International Environment Day (June 5), responding to the Government's launch of the program to plant 1 billion trees "For a green Vietnam" , we plan to organize a number of press agencies to coordinate with the Binh Phuoc Provincial Journalists Association and a number of businesses to plant trees in Binh Phuoc province.
In addition, towards Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day, the Vietnam Journalists Association will coordinate with the Publishing Association to organize a book exhibition of newspapers and journalists combined with organizing exchanges with readers at Nguyen Van Binh Book Street (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City) to encourage reading culture among members...
Also on the occasion of the anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day (June 21), we plan to organize a very special and first-ever "Back to the Source" program, which is to organize for a number of reporters in the Southwest to visit the National Monument "The Founding Site of the Vietnam Journalists Association" in Dinh Hoa District, Thai Nguyen and receive membership cards directly awarded by the Association's leaders.
Also, on March 21, 2023, the Government issued a Directive on strengthening policy communication with many very important contents. We are also coming up with ideas to coordinate with agencies and departments to conduct seminars and discussions with the focus on how to promote the role of the Association of Journalists at all levels and press agencies in improving the quality and effectiveness of policy communication. And there are many things that we want to do. We hope to meet you at some point in the near future to share about the initiatives that the Vietnam Journalists Association in the Southern region is nurturing.
+ Yes, thank you very much!
Ha Van - Hoa Giang (Implementation)
