Here, Mr. Do Van Van - Director of the Southern Plant Protection Center (Plant Protection Department) said that IPHM is the abbreviation of the integrated plant health management program.

The general objective of the IPHM program is to enhance plant health, improve pest control and resistance to adverse weather conditions, improve production efficiency, ensure food safety, protect the ecological environment and biodiversity.

In particular, by 2030, the goal is to have over 90% of rice, vegetable, fruit, ornamental and medicinal plant areas apply IPHM. 70% of corn and industrial crop areas apply IPHM (at least 60% of corn areas, 50% of industrial crop areas apply all IPHM measures).

The amount of chemical pesticides and inorganic fertilizers is reduced by 30% and economic efficiency is increased by 15-20% compared to conventional production.

Over 80% of communes/wards have at least 5 key farmers/commune who understand and effectively apply IPHM, and are able to guide other farmers to apply IPHM. Each province/city has at least 5 national IPHM trainers and 20 provincial IPHM trainers; each commune/ward has at least 2 community IPHM trainers.

According to Mr. Van, in the past time, the Plant Protection Department has trained 756 IPHM lecturers nationwide (132 national IPHM lecturers, 624 provincial IPHM lecturers). For the southern provinces, 180 IPHM lecturers have been trained.

In the coming time, Mr. Van said, the Plant Protection Department will continue to support localities in implementing IPHM, while units under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will deploy IPHM according to assigned tasks. For the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of provinces and cities, it is necessary to speed up the implementation of the IPHM application model as well as find solutions to replicate the model, linking production with preservation, processing and consumption of products.

IPHM is being encouraged by the market trend of increasing demand for organic, safe food that is not contaminated with toxic substances. Photo: Huynh Xay

Like Mr. Van, Mr. Nguyen Van Son - Chairman of the Vietnam Association of Plant Protection Products Production and Trading Enterprises said that IPHM is being encouraged to be implemented. According to him, the market trend is increasing demand for organic, safe food that is not contaminated with toxic substances.

According to Mr. Son, instead of abusing chemical pesticides, using biological pesticides in agricultural production is a measure that is in line with the trend. Currently, many large corporations and enterprises in the world food market are moving towards trading agricultural products using biological pesticides.

Speaking at the forum, Mr. Le Van Thiet - Deputy Director of the Plant Protection Department emphasized that localities have been implementing IPHM (formerly the Integrated Pest Management - IPM) quite well. From there, it creates quality products, meets export needs and especially helps farmers reduce production costs.

"IPHM has equipped farmers with knowledge about healthy soil, providing nutrients for the soil, reducing fertilizers and pesticides. To develop and expand IPHM in the future, Mr. Thiet believes that the entire political system needs to join hands to be successful" - Mr. Thiet assessed.
