'Saigon Commandos' and the films that made director Long Van famous

Director Long Van's name is associated with "Saigon Special Forces" - the first color film of Vietnamese revolutionary cinema, released in 1985.

After a long battle with illness, director Long Van passed away at the age of 87. His passing left many generations of movie lovers feeling regretful.

During his lifetime, director Long Van had a brilliant career. At one time, he was mentioned as a phenomenon of cinema with the theme of soldiers and the revolutionary struggle of the nation, because the films he directed had a strong vitality in the hearts of the public.

Director Long Van was born in 1936 in Hanoi, then moved to Thai Nguyen with his family to fight the resistance. At the age of 14, he was sent to study in China with Professor Nguyen Lan Dung and Professor Ho Ngoc Dai.

In 1955, he graduated from Pedagogy and worked as a teacher until later switching to cinema. He belongs to the generation of directors who matured before 1975.

After graduating, he spent 15 years working as an assistant director for senior directors such as Pham Ky Nam, Huy Thanh, Bach Diep, Nong Ich Dat...

His first film as a director was The Call Forward in 1979, written by writer Phu Thang, which won an award at the Moscow International Film Festival . This was followed by the films The Meeting Place of Love and For All Tomorrow.

However, director Long Van's name is associated with the film Saigon Special Forces, the first color film of the Vietnamese revolutionary cinema, released in 1985. The film about the Saigon Special Forces by director Long Van, released in 1986, set many records in terms of viewership, caused a stir in public opinion, and was the launching pad for a series of actors from main to supporting roles.

Saigon Special Forces consists of 4 episodes: Rendezvous, Quiet, Storm and Return My Name . The film was written by Le Phuong and Nguyen Thanh and directed by Long Van. The film was shot in 1982 and lasted about 4 years.

Director Long Van once said that the film was originally called Angels Go to Battle . However, General Secretary Nguyen Van Linh (then Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee) suggested that he change the name to Saigon Special Forces to "match the reality of what happened, how could angels achieve feats like special forces soldiers?" Thanks to this suggestion, he decided to change the name of his film.

The exciting action film set a record for audience numbers with tens of millions of viewers in the late 1980s.

Up until now, the actors he selected to play the main roles in the movie Saigon Special Forces have all become roles that are "nailed" in the hearts of the audience, such as Meritorious Artist Thanh Loan as nun Huyen Trang, Meritorious Artist Quang Thai as Tu Chung, Meritorious Artist Ha Xuyen as Ngoc Mai, artist Thuong Tin as Sau Tam...

"Saigon Commandos" by director Long Van became a cinematic legend.

After Saigon Special Forces, director Long Van brought the image of leader Nguyen Ai Quoc to the big screen for the first time with the film See You Again Saigon.

The film was commissioned by the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee and Mr. Vu Ky - Secretary to Uncle Ho was invited to be the political advisor for the film. The film started filming in 1987, under extremely difficult financial conditions. However, director Long Van was determined not to do it carelessly.

Later, director Long Van continued to make films such as Liberation of Saigon, Forward Call, For All Tomorrow, Meeting Place of Love, People Without Surnames...

In particular, Liberation of Saigon is the film that recreates the most epic historical moments in films about the Vietnam War. Those are grand scenes of smoke and fire, tanks rumbling forward, soldiers from both sides rushing forward to shoot like bullets, the airport being heavily shelled, gun emplacements being blown up by artillery shells and helicopters roaring in the sky...

Around 2006, he was commissioned to make a film about the police force and The Children of Saigon Special Forces was born. At the 31st Television Film Festival held in Da Nang, this film was voted by the audience as the best film of 2011 - 2012 organized by Television Magazine.

Up to now, the works of director Long Van are still remembered by many audiences. Among them, Saigon Special Forces is still considered a legend of Vietnamese cinema. Each character and classic scenes have been deeply engraved in the minds of many generations of audiences.
