West Lake has many cultural, historical, environmental and tourism values, so at all costs we must preserve, conserve and promote the lake's potential, according to Hanoi Secretary Dinh Tien Dung.

On January 11, at the working session of the Hanoi Party Standing Committee with the Tay Ho District Party Standing Committee, many delegates gave their opinions on the planning, management and exploitation of West Lake.

West Lake is over 526 hectares wide, with a circumference of nearly 15 km, and is the largest natural lake in Hanoi, surrounded by 71 historical and cultural relics. 6/8 wards of Tay Ho district are located along the lake.

According to Chairman of Tay Ho District People's Committee Nguyen Dinh Khuyen, the district is developing a project to preserve and promote the value of West Lake and surrounding areas, while studying plans to improve water quality, improve living space for aquatic species; and closely monitor wastewater sources around the lake.

The district leaders proposed that the city provide funding to implement the project of renovating, upgrading technical infrastructure and protecting the environment of West Lake, including items such as dredging, improving the environment; building inland waterway ports on the lake according to the plan; building fountains and upgrading the surrounding technical infrastructure system.

City Chairman Tran Sy Thanh proposed to soon establish a West Lake Management Board with a serious and systematic development project to promote the value of the lake's cultural space in terms of spirituality, environment and commerce. The district can study the plan to build typical neighborhoods like the projects the district is implementing (Do paper craft village model; Nhat Tan peach blossom craft village, Tu Lien kumquat, lotus) so that people can exchange, redistribute living space, and reorganize urban order.

Sharing the view that it is necessary to develop a specific project to effectively exploit the potential and values of West Lake and its surrounding areas, Secretary of the City Party Committee Dinh Tien Dung said that along with Hoan Kiem, West Lake is one of the cultural centers of the capital, bearing the imprint of the ancient Thang Long citadel.

Mr. Dung agreed to the policy of transferring the management of West Lake to Tay Ho district instead of 8 departments and branches as before. The departments and branches will join hands with Tay Ho district to manage the lake according to their functions and tasks so that this place can truly develop and become a typical cultural and tourist destination of the capital.

Within 6 months, Tay Ho district needs to complete the project, submit it to the city for consideration and implementation. "At all costs, we must preserve West Lake as a true national treasure, preserve and fully promote the lake's potential and values," Secretary Dinh Tien Dung directed.
