Meet the taste…
At the intersection of Nguyen Tat Thanh - Phan Chau Trinh (Tam Ky City), mooncake stalls of Kinh Do, Bibica, Huu Nghi brands... were set up 1-2 months ago. Many popular to high-end products are on sale with diverse designs.
Buying moon cakes for personal use and as gifts, Ms. Ho Thi Hoai Anh (Tam Dan commune, Phu Ninh district) shared: “Compared to previous years, I see that the quality and price have not changed much. However, the designs and styles are extremely diverse. Many beautiful, luxurious boxes of cakes, with 2-4 pieces, are very suitable for giving to grandparents and relatives.”

Having been in the business of Bibica mooncakes for more than 10 years, Mr. Nguyen Van Dong said: “The quality and flavor of the cakes are the same as previous years. But this year, nearly 50% of the products have been newly launched, mainly changing the packaging, labels, and designs to make them more eye-catching. For example, De Nguyet, Da Nguyet, Minh Nguyet… are new products but sell very well, up to now, more than 80% have been consumed.”

Mr. Dong also said that many types of moon cakes have been reduced in sugar content by Bibica Company. For example, Minh Nguyet has reduced sugar by up to 40%. There are also lines of cakes that use completely natural ingredients and Isomalt sugar (a type of sugar for dieters and diabetics). These lines of moon cakes are aimed at meeting the needs of many customers, so they sell well.
Like Bibica, Huu Nghi mooncakes reduce 20% of the sweetness in the cake recipe but still retain the characteristic flavor. Many famous mooncake brands such as Kinh Do, Dai Phat, Richy, Maison Luxury... produce products specifically for dieters. With ingredients from nutritious seeds, fruits and using low-energy or no-energy sweeteners such as Xylitol or Maltitol, these mooncake lines are popular.

Going shopping for moon cakes with his family, Mr. Nguyen Phuong Nam (Hoa Thuan Ward, Tam Ky City) said: “At this time, in large grocery stores, many cake brands are concentrated here for us to choose from. Many cake boxes are very beautiful and associated with meaningful messages such as reunion, gathering, love... But my family is always loyal to traditional cakes.”

Although meeting the trend, producing many types of soft mochi, lotus seed, mung bean, durian, taro... but mixed flavors are still indispensable. According to records, traditional mooncake products at stalls and grocery stores are easily sold. In addition to products with new flavors, whether buying in large or small quantities, customers also choose to add mixed mooncakes.

The market is less active
Although Kinh Do bakery on Nguyen Tat Thanh Street (Tam Ky City) imported 4,000 mooncakes, it only sold nearly 3,000. Mr. Tran Kien (manager of Kinh Do stall in the South Quang Nam area) shared: "Customers come here to eat, mainly during rush hour, but there are fewer customers and sales are slower than in previous years. The economy this year is not encouraging, people's lives are still difficult, but there are many cakes and candies for sale now, that is probably the main reason."

According to Mr. Kien, the new Kinh Do cakes with affordable prices or gift packages priced at 450,000 - 700,000 VND are the best sellers. There are many individual customers, who mainly buy them as gifts. As for the high-end products, very few people buy them, and the counter only sells a few.
Mr. Nguyen Van Dong, owner of Bibica mooncake stall, agreed: “Last year, during this peak season, sales were quite good, almost out of stock. This year, the cakes have sold less than 80%. High-end products are pre-ordered by agencies or companies, but very few. Most of the products sold are popular, mid-range products worth a few hundred thousand, more retail customers, small businesses and agencies buy them as gifts for workers.”

With purchasing power decreasing, many stores and grocery stores are considering the option of “clearing out their inventory” before the end of the season. Having imported 400 million mooncakes, Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh Thu (owner of a grocery store - Hoang Ha beer dealer) has sold more than 70%. Although she has a fairly stable number of customers, Ms. Thu has now made a specific plan to limit inventory.

“Kinh Do gives me a deadline of the 12th to finalize the cakes, and any leftover cakes will still be returned to the company. So there is no need to worry about unsold cakes. Other companies like KiDo do not allow returns. For these types of moon cakes, I will have a discount policy depending on the percentage or buy 1 get 1 free, buy 1 get 2 free… Many people wait until the end of the season to buy cakes. This is an opportunity to push sales and sell out of cakes,” said Ms. Thu.
