KIDNEY PATIENTS ARE GETTING YOUNGER AND YOUNGER
Mr. NAH (33 years old, residing in Lien Chieu District, Da Nang City) went to Da Nang Hospital for a routine health check-up, discovered abnormalities in his urine and was advised to see a specialist in Nephrology. The patient was diagnosed with glomerular disease and was supported to do the necessary specialized tests to find the cause and have a timely and active treatment regimen. According to specialist doctor Le Thi Tien, Deputy Head of the Department of Nephrology - Endocrinology (Da Nang Hospital), if glomerular disease is not diagnosed and treated promptly, it will lead to kidney failure.

Meanwhile, Ms. NTH (43 years old, residing in Dai Loc District, Quang Nam ) had a history of high blood pressure but did not treat it and did not have regular health check-ups. When her kidney function was found to be weak, she had to enter the stage of periodic dialysis. The patient was admitted to the hospital with a lot of vomiting. Subsequent tests showed severe kidney function decline, high blood urea syndrome, severe anemia, and needed emergency dialysis. " High blood pressure is one of the five common causes of kidney failure," said Dr. Tien.
According to Dr. Dang Anh Dao, Head of the Department of Nephrology - Endocrinology, Da Nang Hospital, recently, in addition to the increasing number of kidney patients, the age of patients has also become younger. Many chronic kidney patients are still in school age, 15 - 20 years old, many cases of end-stage chronic kidney failure require dialysis or kidney transplant to maintain life. "In the past year, we received and treated more than 3,400 people with kidney disease; at the hospital, there are currently about 300 patients with end-stage chronic kidney failure requiring dialysis, 70 patients on peritoneal dialysis and about 38 patients needing kidney transplants," Dr. Dao informed.
EARLY DETECTION TO PROTECT THE KIDNEYS
In addition to the alarming figures showing that chronic kidney disease is becoming more common, nephrology associations around the world recommend that if detected early and treated promptly, the progression of the disease to the final stage can be slowed.
Dr. Le Thi Tien shares a test from the International Society of Nephrology to help you quickly assess risk factors for kidney disease:
- Do you have diabetes?
- Do you have hyperglycemia?
- Do you have heart disease or heart failure?
- Do you have swelling in your legs or face?
- Does anyone in your family have kidney disease, dialysis, or a kidney transplant?
- Are you abusing painkillers?
- Do you use herbal medicines for weight loss or to help treat other medical conditions?
If the answer is yes to one or more of the above questions, then you are at risk of kidney disease, and the first thing we need to do is screening tests for diagnosis such as urinalysis, urinary albumin/creatinine quantification, blood creatinine, urinary ultrasound...
In addition, according to the International Society of Nephrology, to protect healthy kidneys, we need to follow the following 8 golden principles:
- Have a healthy exercise regimen and lifestyle, maintain a standard weight.
- Healthy diet.
- Check blood sugar, urine, kidney function.
- Check blood pressure.
- Drink enough water.
- No smoking.
- Do not use pain relievers without prescription.
- Check your kidney function if you have the following risk factors: diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, obesity, glomerular disease, drug abuse, family history of kidney disease...
This year's World Kidney Day (March 13) has the message "Are your kidneys healthy? Detect early, protect healthy kidneys", to warn about the prevalence and dangers of chronic kidney disease so that people around the world can join hands to prevent the disease with the recommendation: Chronic kidney disease is very dangerous, but can be detected early and treated.
