On July 17, information from Quang Ninh Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital said that the hospital had just received a case of a child choking on a foreign object and had a successful endoscopy.

Accordingly, the patient is a 6-year-old boy in Uong Bi, Quang Ninh, who was admitted to the hospital on July 14 with difficulty breathing, rapid pulse, cyanosis, and whistling sounds coming from the trachea. According to information provided by the patient's family, the child had previously played with a plastic whistle at the nursery. When the child was found coughing and whistling, they suspected that he was choking on a foreign object, so they took him to the hospital for emergency treatment.

The doctor found the object from the sound coming from the child's throat, picture 1.

The chest CT scan results at Quang Ninh Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital showed a tubular foreign body nearly 11mm long in the right intermediate bronchus. Immediately, the doctors consulted and performed an emergency bronchoscopy to remove the foreign body, a cylindrical plastic whistle, measuring 5 x 11mm, from the child's body. After the procedure, the child's health was stable and he was discharged from the hospital.

From the above case, Dr. Le Canh Nhat, Quang Ninh Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, said that large foreign objects falling into the airways can compress most of the bronchi, causing difficulty breathing, acute respiratory failure, and brain hypoxia. Meanwhile, small foreign objects when entering the body and not detected and removed can cause recurrent pneumonia.

Therefore, doctors recommend that as soon as a child is discovered or suspected of having a foreign object in the airway, it must be treated quickly to prevent the child from suffocating. In case the child can speak or cry, take the child to the hospital immediately for examination and removal of the foreign object.

In addition, the doctor said that if the child has severe difficulty breathing, turns purple, struggles, or is in a coma, immediately place the child with his head low, face down on one hand, and use the other hand to pat the child's back to create pressure in the chest to push the foreign object out. For older children, parents should hug the child's abdomen, squeeze the child's abdomen, and the foreign object will easily come out. Then quickly take the child to the nearest medical center or hospital with expertise to ensure the child's safety.
