A map of Greenland's strategic minerals shows the importance of the resources, which have attracted particular attention from the US and other powers. US Vice President JD Vance, during a recent visit to Greenland, reiterated his claim that only US governance "can protect Greenland".
Map of Greenland's strategic mineral resources.
The southern part of Greenland, especially the red area on the map, is rich in important mineral resources. These include metals widely used in industry and some rare earth deposits.
Greenland holds 25 of the 34 minerals that the European Commission considers “critical raw materials” for Europe’s green transition and industry.
However, mining Greenland's mineral resources faces many challenges, including a lack of infrastructure and opposition from residents concerned about environmental impacts. This has left only a handful of companies capable of mining and processing minerals in Greenland.
Tanbreez Mining, a company focused on rare earth mining in Greenland, was sold to New York-based Critical Metals in late 2024. Ryan Kiggins, a political science professor at the University of Central Oklahoma, said Trump’s push for rare earth mines in Greenland reflects the urgency to reduce America’s dependence on a critical resource controlled by China.
Vice President JD Vance, speaking at Pituffik Air Force Base in Greenland, stressed the importance of protecting US interests in the Arctic, especially as other countries increase their presence in the region.
However, the US takeover of Greenland has faced strong opposition from the Danish and Greenland governments. Geopolitical experts say that the US buying or annexing Greenland is an unlikely idea.
