Doctor Nguyen Minh Nghia - in charge of the cosmetic surgery department, Hoe Nhai General Hospital (Hanoi) - informed that he had just successfully performed surgery on a female patient whose breast implant ruptured while she was pregnant.
According to patient VHM (27 years old, Thai Binh), she had breast augmentation 7 years ago in 2018 at a cosmetic facility in Hanoi.
In 2024, during her third pregnancy, M. felt pain in her left chest. When she went for an ultrasound at 32 weeks, M. asked the doctor to do a chest ultrasound and discovered a ruptured breast implant.
Immediately after that, the female patient contacted Dr. Nghia to inform him about her health condition. Because the fetus was too small to be operated on, the doctor advised that after giving birth, the patient would have her breast implants repaired and removed.
At the 36th week of pregnancy, the patient and her family decided to have an active cesarean section. After giving birth, the patient was prescribed medication to stop lactation in order to quickly perform surgery.
Doctor Nghia said the case of a pregnant female patient with a ruptured breast implant is rare. The patient is now recovering well, the surgical wound has healed, and her mental state is stable.
According to Dr. Nghia, breast implant rupture can be caused by many reasons such as sharp objects (sewing needles, syringes, knives), strong external force from the outside when the breast implant is of poor quality...
If breast implant rupture is not detected and treated early, the accumulated fluid can lead to inflammatory reactions, widespread infection, causing breast deformation, requiring long-term treatment.
"Many patients are advised that breast implants have a lifetime warranty, but in reality, no type of implant has a permanent warranty," Dr. Nghia emphasized.
Therefore, doctors recommend that those who have breast implants should be examined and checked if there are any unusual signs such as swelling, pain, tension, breast deformity, etc.
