Previously, Khmer people in Thoi Quan commune, Go Quao district (Kien Giang) grew straw mushrooms in small-scale households with low profits. After the Commune Farmers' Association mobilized them to participate in the Straw Mushroom Growing Cooperative model, production and consumption of products became more favorable. People increased their profits and developed their family economy.
Visiting the family of Mr. Danh Duoc, residing in Hoa Binh hamlet, Thoi Quan commune, Go Quao district, a person who has grown straw mushrooms for many years. Mr. Duoc said that growing straw mushrooms is not difficult and does not require much land. With 1 hectare of vacant land around his house, Mr. Duoc can grow straw mushrooms all year round.
To achieve high productivity, Mr. Duoc said that the ground must first be cleaned by spreading lime to kill bacteria. The most important step is the straw composting step, so when watering, the straw must be turned evenly.
“The straw is brought back to incubate for 12-15 days and must be watered regularly. After 15 days, if the straw is red and has a fragrant smell like the smell of medicine and cakes, then the straw is ready. If it has a bad smell, it cannot be used. To make mushrooms, choose a place under the shade of a tree. If it is too sunny, it will wither and the mushrooms will not grow,” Mr. Duoc shared his experience.
Mr. Danh Roi's family (living in Hoa Binh hamlet) is also a person with many years of experience growing straw mushrooms. Mr. Roi confided: growing straw mushrooms requires little capital, the harvest time is fast, about 30 days, the profit rate after deducting costs is also quite good. However, mushroom growers must be hard-working, diligent, and diligent in taking care of them.
“When growing straw mushrooms, I use the waste straw to make extra money without wasting much land. After harvesting the rice, I do housework and grow straw mushrooms, earning an extra 10 million VND/month,” Mr. Roi said.
According to the Thoi Quan Commune Farmers' Association, Khmer people grow straw mushrooms in households, the production method mainly relies on personal experience, so the productivity and efficiency are not high. To create conditions for people to develop the profession in a sustainable and biosafety direction, the Commune Farmers' Association has mobilized people to establish a Straw Mushroom Growing Cooperative.
Mr. Roi also shared: “I see that joining the Cooperative has many advantages. It is easy to buy raw materials for mushroom production such as straw. The output of mushrooms is also easy to consume, traders everywhere know and come to buy, not as unstable as before.”
Mr. Le Quoc Trang, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Thoi Quan Commune, said: In the past, the Farmers' Association has also coordinated with relevant units to support job services for people such as opening training classes on straw mushroom growing techniques to help farmers know how to grow them effectively.
“Thoi Quan commune has more than 41% of Khmer people, living mainly by farming. The orientation of converting small-scale production methods to cooperative production models has helped Khmer farmers change their production thinking, thereby bringing many practical benefits,” Mr. Trang emphasized.
Local authorities and Farmers' Associations at all levels also created favorable conditions for the Hoa Binh Hamlet Straw Mushroom Cooperative to develop smoothly. Members of the Cooperative were also enthusiastic about production, sharing experiences in overcoming difficulties and striving to develop the family economy. Improved living conditions also contributed to the local authorities' efforts to soon bring the commune to the advanced new rural finish line.
