On the afternoon of March 9, news from Thanh Vu Medic Bac Lieu General Hospital said that the hospital's doctors had just successfully performed an endoscopy to remove a foreign object, a denture about 3 cm long, from a 68-year-old patient.
Earlier, at noon of the same day, Ms. NTN (68 years old, residing in Thanh Tri District, Soc Trang) was taken to the emergency room by her family in a state of esophageal pain, choking, and discomfort. Ms. N.'s family said that while eating, the patient accidentally swallowed her entire dentures and they fell into her esophagus.
Foreign body is denture successfully removed by endoscopy
Through examination and X-ray results, endoscopy showed a large foreign object deep in the patient's esophagus. Immediately after that, the on-duty team performed an endoscopy to remove the foreign object, a denture about 3 cm long, with a sharp metal hook, from the patient's esophagus. The successful procedure took only about 15 minutes. After removing the foreign object, the patient's health was completely stable, no more pain, no difficulty swallowing, feeling comfortable, and was discharged home.
Doctor examines patient NTN
Doctor Nguyen Phuoc Thom, who directly treated the patient, said that handling large foreign objects with sharp hooks is difficult, and doctors must be extremely careful and skillful to remove them from the patient's body. If not detected early, there is a risk of the foreign object puncturing the esophagus, penetrating the blood vessels, causing infection, affecting the patient's health and life.
Doctor Thom also recommends that patients who accidentally swallow foreign objects such as dentures should not try to stick their throats or swallow the foreign object, but should immediately go to a medical facility for timely examination and treatment.
