Technology corporation Amazon has just announced that in 2023, all electricity consumed in Amazon's operations, including the operation of its data centers, will use 100% renewable energy.

In 2019, Amazon set a goal to power all of its global operations – including data centers, corporate buildings, grocery stores and fulfillment centers – with 100% renewable energy by 2030, and the company now says it has achieved that goal seven years ahead of schedule.

To do this, the group has become the world's largest buyer of renewable energy for four consecutive years (according to Bloomberg NEF), and invested billions of dollars in more than 500 solar and wind power projects globally, with a total capacity enough to provide electricity for the equivalent of 7.6 million households in the US.

Reaching this goal early marks a major milestone in Amazon’s efforts to meet its Climate Commitment of net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Looking ahead, Amazon remains committed to this goal, but in recent years, the roadmap has changed in ways that are difficult to predict, largely due to the growing demand for generative AI. Meeting this commitment requires different energy sources than originally anticipated, so Amazon will need to be flexible and continually adjust its approach to achieving net-zero emissions.

As it continues to invest heavily to add significant renewable energy capacity to its portfolio, Amazon is also exploring new carbon-free energy sources that can complement renewables and balance its needs.

“Hitting our renewable energy goal is an incredible accomplishment, and we’re proud of the work we’ve done to meet it seven years early, ” said Kara Hurst, Amazon’s director of sustainability. “However, we understand that this is just one success at a time, and that our work to decarbonize our operations will be adjusted year-over-year. As such, we will continue to invest in solar and wind projects, while supporting other forms of carbon-free energy, such as nuclear, battery storage, and new technologies that can help power our operations for decades to come.”
