According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs of South Korea, from January 2023 to the end of the second week of September 2023, instant noodle exports from the "Land of Kimchi" increased by 23.5% over the same period last year, reaching a value of 657.3 million USD.
Korean instant noodles, also known as “ramyeon” in Korean, are becoming increasingly popular globally, thanks in part to the continued popularity of Korean culture, across all areas such as music, movies, television and entertainment shows, variety shows, etc.
In the eight months from the beginning of 2023, South Korea's instant noodle exports increased 20.6% year-on-year to $607.7 million.
South Korean government data shows that the country's global instant noodle sales have been rising steadily since 2015, reaching a record high of $765.43 million in 2022. Compared to other countries in the same year, South Korea was the world's second-largest instant noodle exporter, behind only China.
Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs attributed the growth of the industry to the growing popularity of Hallyu (Korean cultural wave). In addition, during the Covid-19 pandemic, instant noodles and other instant food products were chosen by many people when they were restricted from going out.
Some of the noodles featured in the Oscar-winning film " Parasite " (2019) such as "chapaguri" (a type of Chapaghetti), instant black bean noodles and Neoguri (spicy udon noodles) have attracted the attention of K-pop fans around the world. In addition, Samyang Foods' spicy chicken noodles, also known as Buldakbokeummyeon, have also been popular in Southeast Asia for many years.
South Korea's Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said it will expand state support for food companies to further promote exports of ramyeon products to the world.
