Xuan Son, Tien Linh shine, Vietnam team enters the final of AFF Cup 2024
With a 2-0 advantage in the first leg of the semi-final, the Vietnamese team entered the second leg of the semi-final calmly on the evening of December 29 at Viet Tri Stadium (Phu Tho). The two teams played a tense game and did not have many real chances in front of each other's goal. In the first half, each team scored once, but the referee did not recognize the goal due to different errors.

The Vietnamese team has yet to score in the first half of the 2024 AFF Cup. It was thought that coach Kim Sang Sik's team would continue this style of play, but in the first minute of extra time, the Vietnamese team was awarded a penalty when Xuan Son was pulled down in the penalty area. The Singaporean player even tore the shirt of the Vietnamese striker. After that, Xuan Son himself successfully kicked the penalty to open the score of the match.
With the goal at home, the Vietnamese players played quite comfortably in the second half. In the 63rd minute, Hoang Duc's efforts to compete and break through created an opportunity for Xuan Son to increase the gap to 2-0 and the total score to 4-0. Singapore's hope of advancing seemed to be gone as they needed to score 5 more goals in the remaining time and not concede any to get a ticket to the next round, however, the away team did not give up.
Unable to make an impression from the attacking situations that brought the ball into the penalty area, Singapore resorted to long-range shots. In the 74th minute, Nakamura scored a long-range shot to reduce the score to 1-2 for Singapore. However, this goal was only for honor, not a fulcrum for Singapore to rise up. In the final minutes of extra time, the Vietnamese team had another penalty kick due to Van Vi being fouled in the penalty area, and substitute striker Tien Linh successfully kicked the 11m penalty to seal a 3-1 victory for the Vietnamese team.

Vietnam vs Singapore Prediction (8pm today): Advance to the final?
In the history of the AFF Cup, no team has ever been eliminated after being 2 goals ahead in the first leg of the knockout round (semi-finals and finals).
History is on the side of the Vietnamese team. In terms of both personnel and performance, the Vietnamese team is better than Singapore.
The only thing we need to be careful about is that our opponents are in a situation where they have nothing to lose. The Vietnamese team needs to play solidly in the first minutes of the second leg of the semi-final. Because, as long as we do not concede a goal in the early stages of the match, Singapore's excitement will automatically decrease.
Not to mention, the physical strength of Singaporean players in this year’s tournament is not as good as that of Vietnamese players. The proof of this is that in the first leg of the semi-final, in the final minutes of the match, the students of Coach Kim Sang Sik (Korean) played better, thanks to being more flexible than their opponents.
Uzbekistan referee to officiate Vietnam's rematch with Singapore
Uzbek referee Lutfullin Rustam, born in 1991, has a FIFA-level international refereeing certificate and is considered to have a lot of experience having refereed many matches in the AFC Champions League, the Asian World Cup qualifiers...
This “black shirt king” is actually not too unfamiliar to the Vietnamese national team players as he refereed the match between Vietnam and the Philippines in the first leg of the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup. In this match, the Vietnamese team won 2-0.
Coach Kim Sang Sik: "The Vietnamese team has one foot in the final"
With the victory in the first leg of the semi-finals, coach Kim Sang Sik emphasized that although the Vietnamese team has the advantage, this score is still not safe and tomorrow's match will not be easy.
“We won 2-0 in the first leg and have one foot in the final. However, this score is still not safe. Tomorrow’s match will not be easy, but the Vietnamese team will try their best as they play at home,” said coach Kim Sang Sik.
The Korean strategist also expressed modesty when talking about his success and emphasized the important role of the players in this journey. He shared: “Some people say I am successful but this is just the starting point of a long journey. My players support me, it is an honor. The Vietnamese team has come a long way not thanks to me but thanks to the players.”
Coach Kim Sang Sik emphasized that the 2-0 score is not a safe advantage for the Vietnamese team. He said that, in addition to focusing on defense, the team will play their best to achieve the best results. "Playing at home, we will try our best and respond to the fans' love," Coach Kim Sang Sik shared, showing the team's determination to bring joy to Vietnamese football fans.
Singapore coach: “We did not come to Vietnam for tourism”
“It is difficult to say how much chance we have of surprising the Vietnamese team tomorrow. I also want to ask the opposite question, how much chance the Vietnamese team has of surprising us,” coach Ogura answered the question of the possibility of a comeback after a 0-2 loss in the first leg of the semi-final. This statement shows the Japanese strategist’s respect for the home team, while also expressing confidence in the Singapore team’s ability in the upcoming confrontation.
When asked about the issue of experience and age in the team, Coach Ogura said: “For me, the age of the players is not an important issue, young players or experienced players have the same ability. We did not come to Vietnam to travel, we came here to fight. Experienced players will lead the young players, they are very eager to show themselves.
