In the days of preparing to enter the new school year, we visited Dai An 2A Primary School, Tran De District. We were told by Mr. Tra Tan Khanh, the school's principal, that in the past few days, teachers and staff of the school have worked together to clean the school, classrooms, and school yard, and neatly arranged desks and chairs, ready to welcome students to the new school year 2024-2025.
Dai An 2A Primary School was built quite spaciously and put into operation in 2022 with a budget of nearly 15 billion VND. Teacher Tra Tan Khanh added that after many years of studying in a degraded school, in the past 3 years, a new school has been built spaciously with 14 classrooms and 7 functional rooms. In addition, the school also has a multi-purpose gymnasium for students to practice physical training, contributing to improving the teaching quality of teachers and students.
“The school has a total of 20 classes with 650 students, of which Khmer students account for more than 50%. For Khmer students, the school allows them to return to school 2 weeks before the opening ceremony to improve their Vietnamese and practice their speaking, so that they can easily access and study well when entering the new school year,” said Mr. Tra Tan Khanh.
Soc Trang is a province with a large Khmer ethnic group in the Mekong Delta region, accounting for more than 30% of the province's population. In recent times, the province has always prioritized investment in building infrastructure and schools in the Khmer ethnic group area, in order to create favorable conditions for children to study well, as well as to shorten the gap between ethnic minority and urban areas.
Five years ago, Tran De Secondary Ethnic Boarding School in Tran De district was built and put into operation, helping nearly 300 Khmer ethnic students in the locality have better learning conditions. Mr. Tran Sung, Principal of Tran De Secondary Ethnic Boarding School, said that the school has 3 areas, including a classroom area with 10 rooms, an administrative area with 16 rooms and a dormitory area with a total of 36 rooms, basically meeting the needs of students studying and boarding.
“On the school side, during the summer, we also prepare facilities. Firstly, the school directs the library department to arrange textbooks, list missing books by subject, by grade, when students gather at school, basically solve the problem of lending books to students 100%. Secondly, teaching equipment, currently, the school is reviewing and adding some facilities and teaching equipment to meet basic teaching needs, the dormitory has also been repaired,” said Mr. Tran Sung.
Thanks to the attention paid to investing in building infrastructure and schools in the Khmer ethnic minority area, the quality of education in the ethnic minority areas in the province has been constantly improved over the years.
Mr. Trinh Van Be, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Tran De district, said that the education system in Tran De currently consists of 46 public schools. With the investment attention of the Department of Education and Training and the People's Committee of the district, the number of solidified schools has been significantly increased to meet the needs of teachers and students to teach 2 sessions/day. Equipment and application of information technology in teaching and learning are also prioritized for basic investment to meet the requirements of organizing teaching and learning and educational activities in schools. Up to now, the whole district has 41/46 schools meeting national standards, a rate of over 89%. Before the new school year 2024-2025, preparations in Tran De district are being actively implemented.
Mr. Trinh Van Be added that the district has directed schools to review facilities and teaching equipment to ensure the best conditions for the new school year: “The District People's Committee has directed specialized departments and offices to repair, renovate and upgrade facilities at 24 schools with a total cost of more than 23 billion VND; purchase additional tables, chairs, boards, equipment... for schools with a total cost of more than 3,558 billion VND. With the investment in renovating facilities and purchasing equipment as above, the conditions for implementing the 2018 General Education Program in all grades from grade 1 to grade 9, from the 2024-2025 school year have basically been ensured”.
In addition, the work of mobilizing and caring for students to go to school, especially those in remote areas, areas with particularly difficult economic and social conditions, and areas with a large ethnic minority population, is being promoted with the goal of ensuring that all school-age students can go to school and improve the quality of comprehensive education in the locality.
